Hi guys,

I just receive my new M1730 today and in the middle process of installation Vista on pair of 320GB HD.

What do you guys use to OC the 8800M SLI? What is the ideal clock setting? Please advise.

Thanks.

BTW, Does Dell usually sned you 2 power supplys? I did not order the extra PSU, but I received 2 of them and they are huge!!

i use nvidia ntune 2.00.23 for overclocking the gpu's, it works great for me. when i'm gaming i set the clocks at 650 on the core, 950 on the memory and I have no heat or artifacting.

Congrats on the purchase! I hope you love yours as much as i love mine!

Congradulations silversaver.

Haven't oclocked mine yet as it does everything I need in spades, but as wardo suggested ntune would be good.......don't think you can change shader freq with it,but might be wrong.
Could also try ATI tool which you can change shader frequencies in.

2 power supplies.....I wish......yeah it is big,the size of the brick doesn't bother me as much as the HUGE THICK power cables attached to it.....I'm sure its going to snap the power port of the board as the cord is so damn stiff and heavy and always seems to snag on everything.

I use nTune also and I run mine at 645 core and 950 mem. I just ran 3dmark06 and got 14,157 with my proc at 3.4ghz.

I've received my beast (see updated signature) last Monday and I am totally blown away by its performance and looks. HOWEVER, two things are really upsetting. My left palm rest gets really warm even if there is no DVD/Blu-ray disk inserted. Also, I am running it at 3GHz having tried first at 3.2 GHz which started HUGE noise from the fans at high. Any advice or experiences?

BTW, running 174.31 from Dell Support and it's 13160 3DMark 2006 for me.

Thanks

thanks guys!

Got home first turn on the lappy install the 3DMark06 and change to 3.4GHz run the test got 13962. I did not like the look and screen quality. The M1710 screen is better quality compare with M1730's Samsung, but the performace blow me away!!

The lappy came with some defeat. The housing of lappy were crack. I really start to like it, but will Dell send the Tech to change the lower part of case? I'll probably call them on Monday.

I still trying to find out how to setup the RAID. Any input?

After install the SP1, new score of 2DMark06 is 14360 stock GUP X9000 @ 3.4GHz

So, Silversaver, what is the fans noise at 3.4 Ghz? Mine is simply terrifying. Do you think it is normal?

no kidding, it is loud. all 3 fans were at max speed. I'll see if fan controller program can overcome the BIO default.

This is the instructions I followed from the 1730 manual ......

At some point a customer may want to configure his or her computer for RAID if a RAID configuration was not selected when purchased. Two hard drives must be installed in the computer to set up a RAID configuration.

Use one of two methods to configure RAID hard drive volumes. One method uses the Intel RAID Option ROM utility and is performed before installing the operating system.

The second method uses the Intel Matrix Storage Manager or Intel Matrix Storage Console. This method is performed after the operating system and the Intel Matrix Storage Console is installed .

Both methods require the computer be set to RAID-enabled mode before starting any of the RAID configuration procedures.

Setting the Computer to RAID-Enabled Mode

Enter System Setup.
Press the up- and down-arrow keys to highlight Onboard Devices. Press Enter.
Press the up- and down-arrow keys to highlight SATA Operation. Press Enter.
Press the left- and right-arrow keys to highlight RAID On. Press <Enter>.
If the setting was changed from RAID Autodetect/ATA to RAID On, a pop-up window displays. If the pop-up window displays, press the left- and right-arrow keys to highlight Yes and press Enter. If the setting didn't change, the pop-up window will not display. Go to step 6.
Press <Esc>.
Press the left- and right-arrow keys to highlight Save/Exit. Press <Enter> to exit System Setup and resume the boot process.

then......

NOTE:
Any data on either hard drive is lost when creating a RAID configuration using the following procedure. Back up all data to another storage device before continuing.

NOTE:
Use the following procedure only if reinstalling the operating system. Do not use the following procedure to migrate an existing storage configuration to a RAID 0 configuration.

Set the computer to RAID-enabled mode.........which you've already done above.....
Press Ctrl i when prompted to enter the Intel RAID Option ROM utility.
Press the up- and down-arrow keys to highlight Create RAID Volume and press Enter.
Enter a RAID volume name or accept the default. Press Enter.
For RAID 0, press the up- and down-arrow keys to select RAID0(Stripe) and press Enter.

For RAID 1, press the up- and down-arrow keys to select RAID1(Mirror) and press Enter.

Press the up- and down-arrow keys and spacebar to select the two drives that will constitute RAID configuration and press Enter.

NOTE:
For RAID 0, select the stripe size closest to the size of the average file to be stored on the RAID volume. If this is not known, choose 128 KB as the stripe size.

For RAID 0, press the up- and down-arrow keys to change the stripe size and press Enter.

For RAID 1, skip to step 8.

Select the desired capacity for the volume and press <Enter>. The default value is the maximum available size.
Press Enter to create the volume.
Press y to confirm creating the RAID volume.
Verify that the correct volume configuration is displayed on the main Intel RAID Option ROM utility screen.
Press the up- and down-arrow keys to select Exit and press Enter.
Install the operating system.

Hope that helps.

where did you find that info gerry? i have looked through the service and user manuals and don't see anything about how to create RAID.

I can't find any info on RAID installation in user manuals too.

When OCing the CPU to 3.4GHz, the BIO default setting all 3 fans (1 CPU fan and 2 GPU fans) on high which is very noise. By using the fan control program I8kFanGUI 3.1, it can only manage the CPU fan and only 1 GPU (on the left) on 8800 M SLI. Which the fan on the "right" of 8800M SLI is always high. Does any one has any ideal how to control both GPU fans??

The X9000 does running lot coolr than other older CPUs, when OCing @3.4 the temp did not stay too high which I am surprise of.

If you have any input on fan controller program for BOTH 8800M SLI fans, please let us know. Thanks.

Edit. The CPU under full load, it is HOT. up to 89C

Yeah sorry wardo,I should have said the dcse manual which is the dell training manual for techs.

The zipped file size is 80 mb,I could share it with you guys if you like......any suggestions on where to upload [for free]so you guys could download it.......I got three of them ages ago [1730,1530,vos1500]before dell found out and closed the link where I got it.

Very handy thing as its a lot more detailed than the online service manuals

yeh, i remember that. it was found before the 1730 was released and dell shut that link down pretty quick. I had a copy of that to but it got deleted along the way, now i wish i still had it.

i'm sure someone here knows of a free place to host that file??

here is a site that will work. you can upload and share files up to 100mb for free. and it's very easy to start, just email and password.

It should be already on there .....intel matrix storage manager,it was on mine...........went into the bios and enabled raid in the matrix storage manager and then reformatted and reinstalled.
http://support.dell.com/support/down...&catid=&impid= has this driver and application under "sata".

you will probably have to use a different driver from mobileforce or laptopvideo2go.....I haven't been able to get dell drivers to overclock in ntune before,it shows the frequency sliders which you can adjust....but the speeds won't stick......maybe the same with rivatuner....don't know

have you played any games on it yet?

I have been playing BF2, Crysis, COD4..etc just test drive the new system @3.4GHz speed. Althought the sound is loud, but the system runs cooler. Time to find a notebook cooler.

I using the stock 100GB HD now and trying to get the pair of 320GB HDs in RAID.

Are you using any applcaition to OCing the GPU??
