Dodgy DVI port?

Hey guys...

Excuse my ignorance if this seems stupid but here goes...

I've had no need to use the DVI port until today, when I decided to plug it into my new external monitor.
However when I went to do so, I noticed the plug wouldn't fit, now I'm not stupid enough to mistake DVI and VGA so I know I have the right cable, and the pins line up just fine, but it just won;t go in and I've tried a different cable and have the same story,

Am I right in saying there is only one type of DVI, because I seen some that have a cross with four dots surrounding it on the far right hand side and some with just a horizontal line.. Should the one cable fit all types?

You have DVI-I (single link) and I guess you're trying to use a DVI-D (dual link) cord. Take a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVI . The DVI-D shouldn't fit in DVI-I. Anyway, I'm using component for now instead of DVI so I can't really help too much.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the XPS M1710 has DVI-D single link. DVI-I also has the analog signal passing through so you can use a DVI-VGA adapter. In any event a DVI-D single link cable is what you need. Alot of the aftermarket cables you buy are DVI-D Dual link.
