The 17 inch P-6860FX seems to be a slightly upgraded model from the P6831-FX

This model sells for $ 1349.00 at best but and comparisions to the 6831 this new model is speced to have a T5550 CPU (which my 6831 had ayways)
also includes 4 Gigs of memory, and a 320 GB HD.

Otherwise it is the same as the 6831.

Quick question for someone who knows about this sort of thing: I don't really NEED a laptop right now but I will for when I'm travelling in August, and I'm wondering, will Gateway release an upgraded model of the p-6860fx within a month's time? What is the likelihood that this is going to happen? I want it now but would it actuallly be worthwhile to wait ONE month for a newer model?

Thanks if anyone has any insights.

the new intel processors are due around the end of this year, we likely will not see a GPU upgrade until into 2009.

really this 6860 was prety much the same as the 6831 with just a larger hard drive, more memory, and a 64 Bit OS

Good sale on it now

Whats the difference between the 8800M GTS and the 8600M GT as far as memory/gpu core speeds and performance differences?

Are they planning on releasing a new laptop soon to replace this one?

Because I'm about to buy it because, with the easy upgrading and everything else, it just seems too good to be true.

Ahh damnit.

I just missed that deal, didn't I.

I just picked this up at Best Buy for $1,099.... When they went to ring it up, it shows $1499. I complained that the tag on the display clearly shows it for $1,099... she said that the sale was over a few days ago, and that the new price is in effect now. I asked to speak with a manager. He apologized for the error, and told the clerk to sell it at the advertised price that was displayed.

Awesome laptop to say the least. I will upgrade the CPU sometime, but I doubt it'll even be this year. I would have liked to have a 1680 x 1050 res on the LCD, but for the price, I guess I really can't complain too much.

Update

3d Mark 06 scores
7070 @ 1440 x 900
7382 @ 1280 x 800

The OS is Vista x64 Home Premium.
I am definitely looking at running a RAID 0, and upgrading the CPU sometime late this year, early next year probably.
I am also in the market for a really nice case/bag for this, if anyone has some suggestions along those lines.

Congrats, great price as well.

Upgrading the CPU is easy, adding the second hard drive is a breeze, and I did change mine to a WUXGA display, figiuring a cracked display would not be covered under warranty anyways unless you buy the accidental breakage coverage from Best Buy

just an update...

I am extremely pleased with this laptop. Other than one dead pixel, this thing is perfect. I am about to drop in a T9300 or T9500 depending on the prices I can get. I'm also either putting an LG WSXGA or and LG WUXGA panel in this bad boy. The new hdd will also be installed next week. I couldn't help it lol.

I am not sure the WSXGA is compatible (Supported) so just in case stick with the WUXGA
post #14 of 17
what do you mean, not supported? The video card would support that res surely. I'm new to this so if you could explain what mean that would help.

I dont think i'd want a res that high. Unless you think the rig can down res decently enough to play games at non-native res's.

The options for the laptop are WXGA or WUXGA they have been added to the GPU BIOS to support those displays, so unless you have a dump of the bios to confirm that the WSXGA display is supported it may not work / or work properly when you install it.

My main point being you may want to do more research to cinfirm that it will work before spending the cash on a WSXGA display.

Brand new refurbished(I mean recertified) maybe...... Most likely the sticker that said recertified was removed from the bottom by the seller. It does not make it a bad unit either just saying =) I got one too but I knew it was not new but you would never know it using it or looking at it...
