Western Digital's New VelociRaptor Drive

Check out Western Digital's new hard drive over at PCWorld. For $300 you get 10,000 RPM, 300GB and the ability to write 3.06GB in 89 seconds!

According to Western Digital, the thermal temperature ratings on this drive are about the same as its predecessor. But the heat sink serves to reduce the drive's temperature by about 5 degrees...

In one of its most impressive feats, the VelociRaptor required just 89 seconds to write 3.06GB of files and folders, besting the next-best drive in our chart, the Western Digital Caviar SE16 750GB, by 32 seconds--a 26 percent improvement.

It's not bad. A 2.5-inch VelociRaptor for a 3.5-inch drive bay is weird.

So, if it's a 2.5" drive encased in a big-ass heatsink... I wonder if a notebook version of it is that far behind.

... Just bought the old Raptor 150G for $157.

Would have jumped at this one.

What would buidling a computer be without having newer, better, cheaper hardware coming out the next week though...

Looks like initial shipments will go exclusively to Alienware soon, with retail out mid May.

Hope the 150GB Raptor will go down in price when the VelociRaptor hits the street.

NP, sir. It did catch my eye, gotta admit...coupla others I read just alluded to, 'a certain OEM that caters to gamers...'

Gonna get you one or two? The Anandtech 'preview' not glowing (but qualifies the bugs to be fixed before release). Everyone else seems to be falling all over themselves.

I could go with a coupla $110 150GB Raptors my dam self!
