e1705 problems

Hello, when I turn on my inspiron e1705 during boot the screen has white marks on it all over the screen and when the os starts to load (windows xp) the screen look perfectly fine. The dashes are even there if I go into setup. After windows boots and it should show the logon screen instead the screen is blank (black) and the computer is totally idle. At that point I even tried putting in a cd to see what would happen and it doesn't even respond by spinning the cd. The hdd light doesn't show any activity and the only sign of life is that the laptop is getting power. I just started the extended self diagnostic test that can be accessed through the boot selection menu. Any input help, tips, previous experiences with similar problems, recommendations on what to do or what is wrong would be helpful.

It's a dell inspiron e1705 17" wuxga, dvd burner, BT, wi-fi, 100gb hd, core duo cpu, 7900gs, 2gb 667mhz ram. Bought new about 2 years ago I think.

Well now I know how dell has such good deals. The diagnostic scan showed Error Message 5300-0119. Has dell done anything about the crappy memory on the video cards? What's the next step I need to take? Is it fixable?

Should I replace the 7900gs with something better like the 7900gtx or fx2500m? Where's the best place to look for these cards?
i honestly dont know if u can install any gpu outside the 79xx range. Maybe ok with the 8xxx model.

Best place for gpu? ur guess is just as good as mine. Search the net, newsegg, ebay or dell itself. Maybe some forum users can chip in on this

I'm doing research on it but it will be a little while before I figure it all out. So far the 7900gtx would be great aside from it's price. I might do it.

The difference in price between a 7900gs and a 7900gtx isn't much and since the 7900gtx is more powerful I think it would be a good upgrade. Besides making modifications to the case and needing a more powerful charger is there anything else that I need to know? I was also interested in finding out if I can run the 7900gtx at slower speeds using software to reduce power consumption while not gaming?

. powerful charger meaning more wattage output, right?
. gpu cards cannot be throttled down, at least that is what i believe. So u were talking about CPU throttling?

I was thinking of slowing the graphics card down in any way possible to use the lowest amount of power for times when not gaming if that is safe for the card.

i am not sure if anyone (or how) can "slow down" any graphic cards - other than using less graphic intensive apps

Found the touchpad cable about to fall out and the BT card was not in it's holder. Here are the pics:

Put the Bluetooth in it's holder:

Things in here are small, like the modem:

With the screen, keyboard, etc. removed

The 7900gtx:

Most importantly, Arctic Silver 5 is amazing. I thought I damaged the cpu fan but it doesn't turn on because it runs so cool. Even during a game the cpu fan was off. At idle the temps were like 28C I didn't have the correct size torx bit for the gpu, I had the smaller one and the larger one but not the right one so I'll be putting as5 on that latter. Before my laptop was warm where the cpu is and now its cool. It's amazing.

I have the same system and my screen is totally black I dont see anything even during the startup.
You might try hitting enter because usually after failing boots it goes to safe mode and requests selection from the user start normally or safe mode or something else. (If you push up arrow 8 times it is safe mode with networking) After that it asks you to select operating system (another enter) and after that it starts up.
hope this helps.

good luck

In regards to some earlier questions, yes GPU's throttle just like CPU's. CPU's throttle due to load on the card just as GPU's except GPU's (generally) have only 3 performance levels (sometimes 4): 2D/ Low-3D/3D. Theoretically, the 7900GS and 7900GTX should use the same amount of power on battery when only doing 2D tasks (i.e. no video watching and no games). This throttling is done automatically by the driver so there is no tweak needed on your part. You can however tweak just how the card reacts but thats abit advanced for what you wanted.

Thanks for info zzpulp. The 7900GTX had the same problem as my original card so I'm a bit freaked out thta somethings up with my motherboard because the first card had mem issues and now this one after two weeks had the same issue. I just recieved my replacement 7900gtx and I'm hoping that my mobo is not causing problems.
