8600GT vs the 7950GTX

in the m1720 config page for my country, dell is offering the following graphics cards:

128MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GS [add $160]
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT [add $250]

are these better than the 7950GTX?
Defintely not. (do a quick search to see how much not ;-) )

But basically, the 8600 only rather sucks, and the 8400 really sucks comparatively.

look in my sig for the card specs

None of them are better than 7950GTX.

there is only ONE mobile card whos better then go7950gtx. and thats 8800M GTX

go7950GTX performs also better in DX10 games then 8600M GT, (MUCH better)

I almost started laughing after reading this, not because the original poster is dumb, it is a legitimate question, but because of how much 8600 bashing I have seen on these forums...lol

There is only one post that actually bash the 8600, and that maybe because they went new, thinking they were going to get better performance than their old unit. There’s nothing wrong with an 8600GT…unless you’re moving from a 7950GTX. If you’re looking for a good balance, the 8600GT is the way to go.

umm how? 7950 is not a dx10 card. you cannot play with dx10 turned on with 7950. with dx9 selected 7950 will be much better obviously.

edit: cobra beat me to it

8600 is basically a midrange solution, while 7950 was the best mobile card in the last gen.

ok another question. how does the 8800gts like in the gateway stack up to the 7950gtx go ? probably just a little bit better?
i would think the gateway card is better, BUT the processor in that rig isnt really all that good, and could bottleneck the whole thing. the card shoudl be tight though.

mmmmhhhhh.

off course i know that go7950 gtx is no DX10 card.

but once again, go7950gtx run Crysis, Bioshock, etc, etc, (who is a DX10 game, but run in DX9 with example a go7950gtx) ten times better then a week 8600M gt !!!!!

8600M gt is quite mediocre. go7950gtx is soooo much better, should NEVER buy a laptop with 8600M gt if a had the chance to a go7950GTX, go7950gtx will last much much longer...thats for sure

Just to get a little terminology right, Crysis is a game that supports DX10. It also however supports DX9. Its not that DX10 is backwards compatible or anything.

And the 8600M GT actually outperformed my 7950GTX in F.E.A.R. albeit the machine it was in had a better CPU ( I do however question the quality of the code of F.E.A.R.)

i agree and disagree at the same time. although the 7950 is a better card, it can only run dx9 games and not dx10. at some point, dx10 will become the standard thereby making the 7950 extinct to a point. the 8600 although slower, will still be able to play games on the dx10 platform. so in that instance, no, the 7950 will not last longer.

Yeah I think he worded it poorly. In actuality the 8600M GT has to be the card that lasts the longest simply bc there will be DX10 only games in a few years (1.5 or more). Anyway, by that time the 8600M GT will probably lack the horsepower to play the game w/ any sense of immersion.

7900series or 8000 series still can play game, it just matter of FPS.. what type of games you are playing.

8800m GTS beats the 7950GTX quite badly actually. Notebook check as a source sucks. 8800m GTX beats the 7950GTX in SLI, yeah one single 8800m GTX beats the SLI solution of the 7950GTX.

And I agree with former, 8600m GT is a midrange card that isn´t even capable of running games in DX10 with good framerates in the first place. If you want to run in lower resolutions then the 8600m GT is a good card, but higher res and it falls behind badly.

Your welcome!
Keep notebook check handy, it’s a nice to see what cards do at their default settings. Using it, could keep you from making mistakes on old versus new. As KSMB stated early on in this thread, the 8800GTS and GTX is where to start new, if you want to see an upgrade in performance. The 3dmark scores of 05, 06 will show that. Notebook check is a pretty good source to rely on when you don’t know, GL!
