Ooops....103C!

Oops,

After all my hard work - stripped down CPU, GPU and then AS5ed it over the weekend...I only went and played Crysis yesterday with the Power supply pushed up against the back wight hand vent of my 1710.

After 1 hour of playing, I went to check the temps - all smug in the fact I knew I wouldnt be over 90 after all my hard work, and weekend testing....

Imagine my horror when I saw 103C....hope I havent fried my card.

Lesson to us all.....keep your vents clear!!!!

I doubt you've damaged your card; did you see artifacts though?

Yeah... I remember the first time I cleaned my vents out of lint and cat hair--I saw around a 20 degree drop!
How cool does it run without the vent being blocked? ;-)

Briefly saw a yellow type flash, but then everything was OK.

Not getting a 20C drop (I wish), biggest culprit was the CPU heatsink grill. It was nasty.....

When I am not blocking the vents I wm running around 83....better than the 94-96 I was getting.

yea, cleaning and clearing your vents can do a lot!

I was cleaning my heat pipe fins every 2 months until i installed some filters underneath to catch the dust first. Seems to be doing a good job.

Its just a scouring pad, i use mine as a desktop replacement and i dont move it very often. So these are ideal. Just cut them to size and pop them under neath.

I use air spreader from Home Dept. I do it every month, so I don't have to open up the lappy every few months to clean the heatsink. This is the most easiest way to clean the heatsink!! The air was pretty strong to clean from outside. Once you done with you then turn on your lappy and you will see lots dust coming out from heatsinks.

I have used compressed air in aerosol form "air duster" before but it dried my fan bearing and i had to replace it. So i have stopped using that product now.

I just used compressed air. How did this manifest itself?

Did you use while the lappy is of or off? I have been using the compress air (air spreader) for years and none of my lappy have fans failer before...

I had the laptop apart, i like to clean it thoroughly inside. I must of got the air on the fan to much being to slap happy blowing on everything. Im hoping with my home made filter it wont be so much hassle now. But if i do need to do it i will try your method and see how i get on.

Taking the part off is great idea, but that will be difficult for M1730 with 8800SLI. I look at the photo and still thinking how am I gonna take this puppy part to clean it....
