Just need some help getting this working. Can I use this output to connect to my surround sound system using it's Coaxial input. I want to play my MP3.
What I'm not able to do is turn on the (computer's) port for S/DIF out it can be mike in or sub/center out.

look at page 4-13 (left hand side) of the manual. Set up the "jack" to be S/PDIF and then, I believe, you will need to enable the various aspects in the "volume controls" panel.

I believe (after reading the manual) the port has two modes. In regular operating mode it is both mic in and SPDIF out. In Virtual Surround mode it is sub/center. To use SPDIF you will need to use the splitter provided with the laptop. (maybe it's not included, in which case you will need to buy one). I think this port is a TRS port, which provides two channels. SPDIF out occupies one channel and mic in occupies the other.

Cable was not provided.

Whoops...there is no adapter. I was reading the manual of the D800P not the D870P. It seems this is a mono 2 conductor connector not a 3 conductor TRS connector, so there is no splitter. Nevermind.

Yes that is the part I can not do. I can have it has mic in or center/sub. I also have the S/PDIF set to digital out only.

Wait...the manual says the SPDIF port is the leftmost port and the mic-in is the middle port. These two shouldn't be the same port...

Yes that is what the manual says...But not what the software will configure.

i've used it, all i do is put a headphones to rca splitter in the leftmost port and spdif is the left channel, the right channel is to input spdif into the computer... that audio program is the same one they used on the 8890 to which it does have the same config on the computer as it does in the control panel, but on the 8790 its not correct, but your can still work everything properly just takes a little playing around

me and my roomate have got surround working through both the spdif and using a full 6 channel output mode, it all works

Thanks for the info. What setting in the effects manager do I use ? Center/Sub out ? There is no mention of S/PDIF in.

OK I got the 6 channel thing working. But I still can not get S/PDIF working. I guess my other question is what will come out of this port ? Will it only work with DVD's or can I use MP3 also. What I really want is MP3. Or is it better to just get an external sound card ? I called sager tech support and they were not very helpfull. They passed me on to a manager who wasn't sure how it worked. He keeped looking in the manual but there is nothing in the manual that tells you how to use it.

Now this question I can answer: you will not get surround sound from MP3's using SPDIF. You can get stereo with MP3's. SPDIF only transmits surround sound with DVDs and HDTV broadcasts (and whatever else that uses Dolby Digital and DTS).

There is no S/PDIF in on the 8790.

what delta said
itll be sterio but not surround, maybe with a cd configured for dolby surround? i dunno, but not with mp3's for sure

To get surround sound from MP3s using SPDIF you will need a receiver with Dolby Pro Logic II or DTS Neo:5 (I think that's what its called). These are upmixers, using matrixed decoding methods to convert MP3 and other stereo sources to surround.

Ok thanks for the info. I wasn't able to get S/PDIF digital to work. I tested the reciever with my tv set top box. Do you think I could load the sound driver from the 8890 ?

Just to let everyone know what I did...I went and bought a Creative USB sound card. Solved lots of issue. It has optical out and in which is what I really wanted. Also I no longer hear the hard drive or screen scrolling noise any more.
