What to upgrade on a P2110?

My girlfriend has a P2110 that she bought when she lived in Singapore. She doesn't use it. Lately it was only used when I went on vacation to store digital photos. I shoot thousands of photos (in larger RAW format, not .jpg) and I use the Lifebook to store, view and delete the files. I find that the 20 GB hard-drive is too small for the volume of photos I take during the 5 weeks I am away (I usually go to exotic places like India, Ethiopia, Yemen, Thailand).

Recently I installed an Internet router and have bought a wireless adapter so we can use the Lifebook for internet browsing. I updated it to the XP Service pack 2, installed Comodo firewall and free AVG AV and have noticed the machine crawls slooooowly. So I am thinking of upgrading the Lifebook but wonder if it isn't just better more cost effective to buy new laptop.
Is there a decent RAM configurator that will tell me what type of RAM to buy? Will this be ancient museum RAM that would be expensive/hard to find? I think my P-2110 has 240 MB of RAM. Will I buy a new stick or have to replace the one I have?
Is there a known problem with this ancient laptop and XP SP2? Why has it slowed to a crawl? I tried to defrag and it took 30 minutes just to get 15% of the way to a full defrag using DiskLite. Or should I should restore XP to before the SP2 as I am surfing only through a protected WPA secure router?
Is there a special Hard Disk that I need to get? I know with desktops that the current drives are SATA2 - I have never owned a laptop and am not sure if just any laptop HD would be compatible with the P2110.
Also the USB port is USB 1.0. As I use it to download 8 GBs of photos at a time I would like USB 2.0 upgrade so I don't have to wait 30 minutes each evening when I download the RAW digital files. Is this possible? Is there a PCI card that I'd need for this?
Also the battery is old and fully charged only lasts a bit over 1 hour. So a new battery is essential. Are the different classes/types of laptop batteries and if so which ones are compatible with the P2110.
Also, is there a database/configurator that answers all of these questions lest you think I am too demanding/lazy??
So the bigger question would be is it even cost efficient to bother with all these upgrades? I have no idea what the cost of all these upgrades would be. Would you suggest I just buy a new laptop? And if so, does this P2110 still have any resale value? For example, are there P2110 cultists absolutely enamoured with the thing that would pay big bucks for the screen/body/power supply?
There you have it…a longwinded post by someone who knows little about laptops. ANY advice or recommendations about the situation I have described above would be greatly and sincerely appreciated. I thank all sincere and helpful posts in advance!

. hard drive upgrade suggestion:
http://www.siliconpopculture.com/art..._disk_upgrade/
a 60gigo 5400rpm would be a good choice

. ram: i believe that max is 384MB - but many sweared by with 512mb installed. XP should be fine with these numbers regardless
. data xfer: pcmcia-usb2.0 adapter might be a good bet
. u can try to sell the machine for parts, better than sell it as a whole unit
. u r the only one that determines if u want to keep the "cult" laptop or not :-)

One can load more than the mobo's max RAM? Isn't this detrimental? thanks for the data transfer tip - I did this for an aging desktop.

I guess my larger question is: is it worth spending alot of dough on all the potential upgrades....seems to me like a newer laptop would be cheaper than even a few of the neccessary upgrades I need to make.
Or are there really only a few minor upogrades that will get this P2110 museum piece up and running as a decent internet surfing machine? I already have it connected to a network with a 'g' notebook adapter but it is so slow. Molasses slow. i'd be happy with gravy slow.

i own an hp n5430, now that is one dinosaur. But i was able to upgrade the cpu, max out the ram at 512, and a faster drive. So other that fancy games, i can pretty much run everything from this comp (surfing, office apps, watching dvd, listening to musics etc ...)

regarding the "more" ram than what specs says ... one just has to try and see. Like mentioned, many users were able to run 512mb in ur model, so hard to say. Best bet is to go to a shop, personally, try the ram on the spot and see, if it does not work, u r not poorer than before

How do i re-install XP on to a new hard drive? All I have is a recovery disk.

Not that i am interested in doing so, but is it possible to upgrade the Crusoe CPU?

Also - when I called the local PC shop here to inquire about a HD they asked me if my laptop's mobo would accept a HD of that size. how do I find out what is the maximum size HD the P2110 can accept?

. referencing specs, personally i woild not push more than 60gigo drive on ur comp
http://www.kahlon.com/rm30202_Fujits...ook_P2110.html

. cpu upgrade: there is a 1ghz Crusoe cpu floating out there, used in an earlier acer model. trick is to find it

. installation can be tough with only a recovery, borrow some friend's CD corresponding to ur COA key on the laptop

THANKS for your reply. Just curious, why would the KAHLON site list 250 GB HDs for sale for the P2110?

I have a XP pro disk with my desktop PC but the laptop is loaded with XP home.

Have not heard yet from Kahlon. I clled fujitsu support to see if they could tell me what the maximum size HD that the BIOS/chipset/IDE controller could support. they had NO answer. On LEOG the people on that forum seem to think it can take more that 80GB. The store owner at my local PC shop doesn't want to go higher than 60 GB but can't get any in stock.

I found out from leog.net that the P2110 can handle any size HD but that the IDE controller/BIOS wil only recognise the first 137 GB. Apparently ACER IDE controller drivers can be downloaded to ensure it works properly.
I'll get a 80 GB drive (enough for my needs).
Now I just need to learn how to install XP Home. If I do a clean install with the recovery disk won't I need to download drivers?
Apparently there is a 1.5 GB partition on the HD which is a factory image. I need to clone it if I want to preserve that - why would I want to do that?

Clarification - the drivers are all there in the Recovery disk OR the drivers are all there in the imaged partition?
Or both?

apparently the limit for the P2110 is 137 GB due to the BIOS/chipset/ID controller. A larger HD can be installed but the computer/OS will not recognise anything beyond 137 GBs. there are complicated workarounds involving HD partition and new IDE controller driver - but all much too complicated to pretend that I understand.
Now I just need to decide which 120 GB HD to get. i hear the Samsung's are the fastest PATA drive on the market. Even faster than the 7200RPM drives.
