touch pad not working

Hey all i just got my xps and im having problems getting the touch pad to work properly.

First of all it was working fine when i got the laptop
installed vista ultimate 32 bit
still worked until i left it sitting closed for awhile came back and the touch pad was going beserk doing what it wanted to do showing it was being touched when it wasnt

so i reinstalled the drivers updated to a08 bios installed all windows updates etc..

now it doesnt work at all lol
the left and right click buttons do work though
any ideas?

and the synaptic software is installed? i know you can disable through the software.

defiantly a hardware problem tried every setting even tried a live distro of linux and the mouse wont budge with the pad... is there anything i can try before sending it back? like i read somewhere sometimes there is a loose connector and you can take the keyboard off and tighten it?

You could have a look, you have to lift off the bezel above the keyboard carefully and undo 2 screws and lift of the keyboard (ribbon cable attached) and there will be one or 2 plugs. just checkem over.

i tryed taking the bezel above the keyboard off but it wasnt coming off to easy once you get the screws from the bottom out is it just cliped on? it kinda felt like i was gonna break it if i pulled any harder on the tabs

Edit: What kind of XPS is this? Im assuming M1710 if it is anything else then disregard below.

You dont take any screws from underneath, the bezel just prises off so there are no screws holding it on. It can be tight but start at the right hand side and you should see a place to put a screw driver ( a little cut out) and gently lever it up. It will be quite tight but be carfull and keep at it and it will come off, also have your screen open flat.
