Well, in terms of free defraggers, there's not much to choose from, and in my experience in testing them, they're not that great, and you're better off sticking with the Windows-integrated program.

That said, in terms of 3rd party defrag programs, I wholeheartedly recommend PerfectDisk. I've used nearly all of the 3rd party programs out there at some point, and I've tried recent versions of Diskkeeper and O&O Defrag, and I keep going back to PerfectDisk.

I don't mean to sound like an ad for PerfectDisk here, but that's my strong recommendation.

I agree. Perfect Disk is the best defragmenter I've used. It's the only one that I know of that also defrags your boot sector, which can noticeably speed up boot time.

I use Diskeeper Pro (2008 edition) on the XP desktop as well as Vista laptop, and it runs very well on both. I love it's background defragmentation feature..I never had to defrag my drives after I installed it

Unfortunately, all the defrag programs I've tried are feature starved compared to what was available about 10 years ago. The most reliable modern defrag program I've found is the one built into Windows.
