8800m GTX for m9750 - Page 2

I dont see how thermal problems are to blame here since the 8800m were designed to be cooler than the 7 series and it is... in any case i am probably goin to sell my m9750

I think they just want to keep them for the new laptops...

Someone with an m9750's gotta test it with an 8800, so that we would know once and for all...littlefrankus?

yep I dont believe that bull crap that the 8800 has technical problems in the m9750... if the 8700 works then the 8800 should work just fine... since there is suppose to be less heat than the 7 series cards...

Again, MXM isn't a strict format like that used in desktops. There are many cards that claim to be MXM, and for all intents are MXM within the same company. But they can't use a different company's motherboard.

Clevo is the perfect example of this, and to some extent Arima. Their cards are swappable, but only tend to work in their own computers, although you can put "perfect spec" MXM cards into them as well.

AW changed chasis manufacturers from Uniwill to Quanta after the m5550/m9750 for the m15x and m17x. It's possible that there's a difference between Uniwill and Quanta like there is between Clevo and the rest of the world, or Arima and the rest of the world.

The 8700 card that works in the m9750 and the m15x and the m17x would be the same MXM and work in any of them... thus if the 8700 card is the same in all three computers then the 8800 card must be the same form to work in the computers...

No. Did you read what I just wrote?

If that was the case then alienware would be stocking two different types of 8700 cards... which would not be good for business...

all three cards the 8600 the 8700 and the 8800 have to be the same form located in the m15x and the m17x... since you can put the 8600 and the 8700 cards in the m9750 then they must have the same form... or they would be stocking way to many different forms of the cards and thus video cards wouldnt work for customers...

I see... I think you need to read up a little more on MXM in real life, not just the MXM spec.

I know that some cards are made just for certain computers... but when you have a 8700 card and a 8600 card and 8800 card in a computer it must be the same form or they wont work...I bet you could pull a 8700 card out of the m15x and place it in the m9750 and it would work...because I doubt alienware is carrying many different types of 8700 cards... because you would know alienware would screw up and send the wrong one to a person with a m9750 if that was the case...
If the 8800 card was a different form than what the m9750 has in it I would think that alienware would know that and test a card that had the correct form to see if it works....
I think I understand what you are trying to say. You are saying that the 8700 and 8600 cards in the m15x are exactly the same ones placed in the m9750, right? So, this would naturally mean that the 8800 should work too...

But, won't this also require a Video BIOS flash for it to work on the m9750?
yep you got it spartan-117....yeah you would probably need a bios flash but how hard is that really... they would have to be same form factor or they would be carrying way too many different cards which makes no sense to me at all...
Now, I see...when AW said that it was a "technical limitation" it could've just meant a BIOS FLASH was needed. But, it's really hard to say. IMO, they probably just want to stop selling the m9750 and promote the m15x & m17x. You gotta get your hands on an 8800 card and try it out. But, it's impossible to get one from AW.
yeah thats the problem...they dont want to say that it works because then people would want the m9750 probably more since its more affordable to more people... and then they would have to continue to carry the laptop...

I understand that cards come in different shapes and forms but these days most manufactuers use that same design... also it does make a lot of sense for them to stop people from buying the older yet cheaper machine just cuz. The problem i see is that the mobo is self is only made to handle a card of the 7950 and nothing more powerful. This is the same with the amount of ram this mobo can handle, which is really dumb but this mobo does have these limits on them...
