well, actually, no. Short story to a long weekend: Okay, I knew I was taking a big leap on the bleeding edge w/ the 790i Ultra SLi and DDR3 RAM. After about three hours of use, the BSODs kept coming back, each one worse and worse to the point that I couldn't even do a clean and full rebuild. I tried everything, resetting the memory, getting the latest BIOS drivers, getting the latest drivers for everything, etc., etc., etc. Nothing. Spent a lot of time on the phone with EVGA today...turns out there are not many (they actually couldn't tell me of one) four gig kits out there that work on this MOBO. They say, "Hey, we know of seven or so two gig kits that work." And I'm thinking, yeah...so???
Getting to the point, thanks to the glory of newegg, they've agreed to take back the 790i AND the OCZ DDR3 RAM and refund my $ and they're letting me take a slight step back to the 780i and a sweet set of Corsair DDR2 RAM that is easily tweaked upwards as well.
Short solution: By thursday, I'll have the new mobo and ram in and yes, it will be a not quite as sweet as the original idea but it will work! I'm just NOT patient and smart enough to spend a ton of time living on the bleeding edge w/ an nVidia chipset that frankly, at this point in time, isn't quite ready for a consistent light of day. That's NOT a knock, I'm sure if I was smarter or more patient, I could find a way to make it work. But since this machine is in essence an addendum to my mega-Sager9262, I can live w/ the power that it will, indeed have.
I'll post more on Thursday!
later,
pat!
