Argh - Corrupted XP DLLs!

WinXP on my desktop got corrupted DLL (perhaps several) preventing add/remove programs from starting.

Already ran the MS hotfix intructions revealed via Google, no good. 'Repair' install of XP failed on yet another bad DLL.

Currently re-installing from scratch, since all the recent Ghost images are affected too.

Oh well, thank goodness for my Sager, so at least I'm not totally lost this weekend!

I'll take other suggestions, but should be done tonight anyway. Just an annoying report, since I _thought_ I was protected from doing this again...

before you explore the nuclear option, go to your hard drive maker's web site and download any test programs they have. your problem may be a HD problem. I would also download memtest and check your RAM and boot up from Norton Antivirus as a backup option.

you can also start up in safe mode and one by one remove your drivers and then reinstall them. a bad driver might be whats hosing your system.

if these fail then boot to your XP install disk, then select the repair option then go forward to install your OS again.

This link shoud give you some help:

Give the link a read and use the guidelines to repair your OS.

I hope this helps

Yes, there was a disk error found and fixed on a bootup-set chkdisk couple months ago (the error was found when a Ghost image session failed to read a part of the disk). Everything appeared fine back then, and the Ghost session afterwards went fine.

Yes, Norton Disk Doctor and the rest of the Systemworks tools run on this machine regularly. I had a nastly meltdown last year that affected mainboard and two disk drives, so I've been semi-paranoid ever since.

Heh, the 'repair' option failed on other DLLs anyway, that's why I was starting another re-install from scratch. And I have a first-edition XP disk, so CD boot did not want to talk properly to/from the Promise ATA-133 ports (a simple cable move to the normal IDE port fixed that though).

Late last night though I was able to find a very old (Dec) Ghost image that was only mildly-tweaked. That one worked, just had to re-install one ot two minor things to get the Work-related parts working, and the rest of the remaining missing stuff are games and Nero. Promptly kicked myself most of the rest of the night for not looking harder.

I already restored the important user data from a Ghost image made before I started tackling this (since it was working for day-to-day things, just could not patch Windows or add/install stuff). I also rolled back a bunch of tweaks that were in progress via blkvipiper.com site - was trying too many things there and that partially caused the issues in the first place. I'll use XPLite instead.

Only thing I really lost was a barely-used SuSe install, since the fresh re-install of XP reset the MBR. No issues there, I was curious about Gentoo or Solaris anyway.
