Metal Gear Solid 4 - Page 4

LOL - That's what I've been doing. But I think there is something else you can do with them....AHEM....clears throat...

But seriously, if you CQC them for a while you end up in a virtual world (like the target range). There has to be something else besides shooting them, it's just too easy. I tried to CQC them and plug them with the syringe, but all they do is let out a little snicker and something like "no, no, no".

I start looking it up on some of the game boards when I get home and see if anyone else is asking the same question.

We already did a list of Metal Gear's most awkward moments, but now that we've had our hands on the latest installment for a few weeks and entire 1UP staff is long since burned out from playing it or arguing its merits or whatever, we realized that we did the fourth game a great disservice by only including one of its scenes. It carries enough awkwardness for its own list.

5. Otacon is still lame
In order to steal some data to use for her own purposes, Naomi Hunter tries making moves on the good ol' friendly yet meek Otacon. The poor guy has enough in his life to worry about -- girls are just going to screw him up again. At least he said he used to be an anime otaku. Still, it's probably not the first thing you should say when meeting attractive female doctors.

4. Jazz hands of death
There's nothing wrong with supervillains being theatrical, but when Liquid Ocelot -- who has complete control over the nanomachines in the Private Military Company bodies -- starts making the soldiers fire at our heroes by playing cops and robbers with himself, well, it takes us out of the game world for a little bit. Especially if you're the really jaded type.

3. FOXDIE fake-out
As if the game's fourth act isn't already a complete nostalgia-wank, you get one more "remember THIS!?" toward the end with a throwback to Liquid Snake's supposed death from the FOXDIE virus. Only this time, Liquid Ocelot pulls a "gotcha" and leaps up and away to safety. And Snake looks surprised. Really? Our second-guessing lasted only a fifth as long as the time they kept the camera on Liquid Snake.

2. The return -- and subsequent exit -- of Psycho Mantis
After defeating Screaming Mantis, her "inspiration," Psycho Mantis, returns to Snake in a vision. Unfortunately, he hasn't kept up with the game industry in the past 10 years, so his mind tricks are no longer clever -- they're ridiculously embarrassing. Snake, as you'll see, doesn't even flinch.

1. Public toilet humor
Hideo Kojima's storied history with scatological humor is beyond reproach at this point -- though that may be because no other game developer has dared to match his craft at it. Watch as Snake comes upon soldiers and agents relieving themselves in supposedly private moments. The voyeuristic tingle one gets from watching this is thrilling, and then, it ends; it's out of our minds like pee in the wind. This, my friends, is the work of an artist. Bathe in it. Wait...no.

Hi again, Mister Gear. It's been a few years and it's good to have you back. We've had some good times and some bad times. But let's not forget the "holy hell, what on earth am I watching and why did I decide to play this with my girlfriend in the room" moments. Because those were the best.

5. Crotch Grabbing
Metal Gear Solid 2, 3, 4 | System: Various | Release Date: Various | Publisher: Konami I had to combine these into one, if only because the entire list would be crotch grabs, otherwise. Nice touch with the bird crap at the end, guys. That's why I play these games: subtlety and class.

4. Homoerotic Sword Fighting
Metal Gear Solid 4 | System: PlayStation 3 | Release Date: 2008 | Publisher: Konami This is at least a small step up from the typical Japanese gay jokes, which generally consist of "Homosexuals exist! Haha!" At least the end cuts through the usual marketing nonsense and promises simultaneous orgasms to everyone on the planet! Can't wait.

3. Otacon Sleeps With His Mom
Metal Gear Solid 2 | System: PlayStation 2 | Release Date: 2001 | Publisher: Konami "Hey guys, I know this place is going to fall into the ocean any second and then Manhattan is going to explode and oh yeah my sister just died, but can you spare an hour so I can tell you all about the time I banged my stepmom and also sob uncontrollably until Snake gives me a hug? Thanks, you guys are the best!"

2. Do You Think Love Can Bloom?
Metal Gear Solid | System: PlayStation | Release Date: 1998 | Publisher: Konami This bit is made only slightly more weird by the uncertainty over whether or not Otacon is actually hitting on Snake. The truth is worse. After killing Sniper Wolf, who then spills her entire life story over the course of the next three days despite complaining of being "lung shot," (especially cute if you killed her with missiles) it becomes apparent from Otacon's crying jag that no, he just has the world's most embarrassingly stupid case of Stockholm syndrome. Runner up: Everything else Otacon has ever said or done in his life, ever.

1. Jack and Rose
Metal Gear Solid 2 | System: PlayStation 2 | Release Date: 2001 | Publisher: Konami Hideo Kojima once said that the character of Rose and her relationship with Jack was at least partly based upon his own wife. He wasn't laughing. For the first time in my life I find myself feeling very, very sorry for that man.
