The glossy one looked to show fingerprints badly. I'm waiting for a silver one. I'm not paying that price for that black one. If I decide to get one at all. We'll see how they rate once people get them in their hands.

I wish that the m17x would allow you to get only one 8800 cards instead of two... that would lower the cost so that some of us could afford it...

TAKE A BIG HINT ALIENWARE FROM THE CUSTOMERS......

littlefrankus - as with the m15x, they're probably only allowing you to buy the higher-end version of the m17x for now, but will later allow you to get a "weaker/cheaper" system.

When it was released, the m15x only had the 8800m GTX, 2.4ghz+ processors, 2gb or 4gb ram, 200gb+ hd, etc.
Now you can get an 8600m gt, 2.1ghz processor, 1gb ram, 120gb hd, etc.

its a steep price for two 8800 cards...they would sell more if they would allow people to decide for themselves what they want...

Or people who don't want SLI cards could just get another brand or wait a month or so.

Or they could buy it with SLI cards, remove one and sell it on ebay for $1k.

Good point, you could easily ebay one of the cards for far more than you paid for it.

I knew this was going to happen. I really was excited for the m17x, after going Dell so long for lappy's i decided i would give Alienware a try, I waited and waited and waited, and then finally gave up. So one week after getting my Dell 1730 Alienware finally releases the m17x, and I actually dont regret it. Its about $1000 more for the same configuration than the 1730 I bought. I do like the styling of the m17x better, but for $1000? no thanks.
Cheers

The m17x has a 12 cell battery! It also has binary gfx and stealthmode, which means.. you can do the same "tweaks" I did to my m15x for the m17x, and you'll get probably 50% more battery life! The screen is bigger so of course it'll take up more power but... 5+ hours on a 17" laptop with a single battery would be awesome! Then just restart it and you have SLI 8800 GTXs.

I don't think that the m17x has binary gfx. It doesn't say so on the tech specs page of the m17x as it does for the m15x. But stealth mode is for sure.

And it says "fully customizable" on the selection page. So, a single 8800 won't be seen on the m17x.

wow this thing is sweeet... i also like the fact that the high res screen is already part of the base unit but 1000 buxs for vid upgrade... wow!

Yeah I was almost tempted to buy a green m9700 when I was looking for a laptop but I decided that the m9750 was a better computer with a dual core in it... but if the m9700 had a dual core in it then I would have bought it in a second...

Here is a quote from the web the design tab for the m17x:
Save Power with Stealth Mode

Alienware built the Area-51 m17x high-performance notebook to take on even the most resource intensive applications, but we recognize that not all users need that level of power all the time. The Area-51 m17x’s Stealth Mode option lets you throttle back the CPU and GPU. Whether you want to boost battery life while traveling or working in the field or you just want to catch up on e-mails, Alienware provides the flexibility you require.

Yeah, there's stealth mode. But, no mention about smartbay battery or binary gfx...

I noticed when configuring an m17x, that you can only have 1 HDD if you want the 1GB of Turbo Memory.
