PS3 Questions

Hey guys - I'm looking for a few opinions on the PS3.

1) In your experience, how well does it upscale standard-def DVDs? Any lagging/ghosting/pixelation problems?

2) I'm hearing of a new PS3 console coming out this summer with a larger hard drive. Should I wait until then or go ahead and pick up a PS3 with a 40GB hard drive for $399. For that matter, is there a bundle currently available that you would recommend (please give location).

Thanks for the help

1. Very well. I have not seen any lagging/ghosting/pixelation problems at all on my 60GB one. In fact, it's hard to tell the difference between that and a Blu-Ray picture at times.

2. There's a 120GB coming out and that's much better than the 40GB. Right now, if you can find one, the 80GB and 60GB are pretty good. 40GB I wouldn't recommend unless you don't plan on playing PS2/PS1 games on it. But you can easily attach an external hard drive anyways so storage isn't that big an issue. But I'd wait for newer consoles with Dualshock 3 to show up (likely the 120GB one).

Being backwards compatible with ps1/2 games isn't necessary. I understand you can install a larger hard drive with relative ease. Is it any standard size 3.5"?

For home theater enthusiasts, the new upscaling options make this update a truly beautiful thing. I put in Lord of the Rings and then Star Wars Episode III and was impressed in both cases. You can't make something out of nothing, even with upscaling, so don't expect dropped jaws and Blu-ray-like visuals. What you will get is a solid improvement in image quality over standard DVD—as good as I've seen on most standalone players.

The bottom line is that the PS3's upscaling is pretty good, although it doesn't compare to top-of-the-line players such as the Oppo DV-981HD or the new high-def disc players with HQV processing, such as the Samsung BD-P1200 and the Toshiba HD-XA2. On the other hand, the PS3's DVD performance is definitely a big step up from that of the Xbox 360 Elite. In the final analysis, when you consider that upscaling is just one of the many functions of the PS3, we think the performance is pretty impressive.

for your 2nd question, i wouldn't bother waiting for the new PS3.... just get the 40GB and install your own large hard drive.. its simple

Well - I just took a trip over to AVS Forums. The PS3 is owning, hands down.

Now - which retailer has the best bundles?

Are you buying a ps3 just for the blu-ray?

There are better stand alone players out there. If you plan on playing some games, which I hope you would. It's a great system and a great all around deal.

I'm waiting a month or so to get a ps3. I feel bad for spending all this money and my girlfriend gives me alot of crap about it.

I'm sure I'll play some games - but it'll primarily serve in my HT to play BR/DVD media. The latest firmware release (15 April) enables DTS-HD support - one of the main reasons some originally avoided the PS3 as a HT component.

Dont know which threads you've been reading but both 360 and Wii have EACH outsold PS3 2:1.(Or only 1/5 of nextgen market) Dont know how that is considered winning hands down.....??

I think he meant as an Home Theater component. AVS is for Audio and video, not really about gaming.

It's widely accepted as a HT component.

My bad, I thought he was talking about gaming.
But as a HT component, yes I agree, very solid choice!

P.S.
AVS has a very strong gaming section!
Its not just AV.

Even if he was, numbers do not mean greatness.

No I'm explaining to you your other mistake. Armageddon made over $500 million world wide... does that make it a better movie than the Departed?

The answer is no.

I agree with your analogy totally(not the PS3 is even close to winning ), but it still reads like flame bait.
I think you're confusing flame baiting with something else. This is just rational thought and discussion .

If it's no big deal then you can always install a standard laptop size hard drive or just connect an external one.
