PAE ( Physical Address Extension ) Setting in VISTA ULTIMATE 32-bit

Thread Starter
I have just got Dell XPS M1530 with below configurations :
Intel Core 2 Duo T9300
4GB RAM
GeForce 8600 GT 256 MB
200 GB 7200 rpm drive
Intel Next-Gen Wireless
Windows Vista Ultimate
15.4 TFT TrueLife WSXGA+
I have understood that not all of the 4GB will be used by the OS.

My questions are:

1. My friend said that Vista will use approximately of 3.25 GB only and THE REST of it will be used by the graphic card. So what I get from what he said is my graphic card memory will expanded to 512MB or more. Does what I think correct? If not, what is the correct condition for my system above?

2. I also have read that to fully use all of the 4GB, I must use the Vista 64-bit and in other article, I read that there is a utility/technology named PAE ( Physical Address Extension ) which is only available for 32-bit Windows.
I was confused when I come to part that mention if I use PAE, the 32-bit Windows will use totally of 4GB and on the next part of the SAME article, it said that I must use the Vista Service Pack 1 for PAE to INDICATE/RECOGNIZE ( INDICATE ONLY, NOT USING ) the system physical memory available is 4GB.
Which one is correct?
What does PAE for if it ONLY RECOGNIZING the amount of memory available?

3. Is there any other way to fully use the 4GB RAM beside Vista 64-bit? Because it must be very difficult to get the application software for the 64-bit, and expensive of course.

4. What are the advantages using 64-bit instead of the 32-bit Windows?

Thank you very much.

64bit Vista is the way to go (if you plan on using more than 4GB of RAM)......you could use the 32bit Vista, but whatever version you use should be fine, just make sure your running Vista SP1 the memory addressing issue is FIXED in SP1....just incase you weren't aware of this, and also the PAE (Physical Address Extension) which is only available for 32-bit Windows is more for windows XP, it really does NOTHING in Vista 32bit , I know, I've tried it, way before the Vista SP1 FIX so, remember, results are varied on different Systems, not all systems are created equal

very rarely will you run into a problem with applications that will only work with 32-bit Vista and not 94-bit vista. I wrun 64-bit Vista on my main machine, have been since it came out, and have only ever run into one program that didnt work (Adobe Premier Elements 3)

Yeah, I got my copies of FREE Vista Ultimate 32bit & 64bit.........I'm going to install the 64bit and see how it go's, only problem is, I have to do a clean install cuz you can't upgrade 32bit to 64bit, but I have a backup of 32bit Ultimate if anything go's arry
so, Anaconda you think my Gateway MX6453 notebook can handle 64bit Ultimate?

Thanks Guys...........I installed Vista Ultimate 64bit, but, after I did, my MX6453 took a huge performace hit..here's what happened, in 32bit I get a Vista WEI score of no more than a 3.0 to 3.5. but in 64bit I only get a WEI score of 1.0 to 2.0, no matter if I have the lastest ATI Video/chipset drivers or Vista SP1 installed, also, 64bit WAS SLOW on my notebook, 32bit was a lot faster, so rather than to waste any more time on this, I re-installed my Vista Ultimate 32bit backup, but , before I could even do that, I had to DELETE the 64bit partition in order to restore it back to 32bit Vista .........at this point I'm going to keep the 64bit Vista and save it for a more newer desktop (that can really handle 64bit and do it justice) I really didn't see any difference perfromace wise between 32bit and 64bit....... it worked, just not very well to me.......at least NOT on this notebook it didn't To the OP that posted this thread....go ahead and install Vista 64bit (if that's what you have) but remember...individual results w/ Vista 64bit may vary, and all systems ARE NOT created equal........
