So my XPS Gen2 LCD went nuts... have some questions.

Howdy folks,

When I took my XPS Gen2 out of standby this morning the LCD had a bar about an inch wide running from the bottom to the top that is light and flickering. Then another bar next to ithat one that is even lighter and flickering. I reseated both LCD connectors, rebooted and tried several other adjustments without any luck.

I have the WXUGA Clearview screen - and could have sworn I saw something about Dell having a recall on these if they died? Could anyone direct me to the proper location for that? I'm just... exasperated this happened out of nowhere :/ The laptop isn't even 3 years old :/ Thanks for any help you can provide me with.

Hey thanks for the link. I later saw it was a sticky..I'm blind sometimes.

I called Dell and they said it was one of the models affected by the lines. I am a bit worried because when I first power on I get lines, and then sections flicker and form bars. In any case a technician is coming out next week to replace it for me. I'm just hoping the difference between vertical lines and vertical bars isn't enough to sink this effort...

Failing that, does anyone have experience with disassembling the LCD and attempting a hand repair? I'm a rather experienced EE so I am confident in my ability to take it apart and put it back together. But lacking experience with LCD designs and schematics I'll be able to do nothing more than poke around and maybe replace some of the identifyable ICs. Thanks for any help you can give me!

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Have you tried via a external monitor to see if you get the same results?

An external monitor looks just fine, so I am assuming its the LCD. Crazy.. I really baby this thing and it sucks it just crapped out like it did

I see some places selling Dell XPS Gen 2 LCDs for 220$...which isn't too bad if you ask me. Does anyone know of a cheap and/or reliable reseller of XPS Gen2 parts? Thanks a bunch!

I thought a tech was going to replace it?

It was a trying ordeal... getting through the 7 layers of Dell tech support hell is enough to drive a man insane.

They had me send it in and replaced the screen...

BUT they replaced it with the wrong LCD. They put in a matte finish WXGA screen wheras I previously had a glossy finish UXGA screen

I know the feeling. How long did you have to wait for the LCD?

Get this... they aren't going to fix it now. They are not going to correct their mistake because they just realized 3 years since the date of purchase was April 28th and they fixed it on May 8th... WTF!

Does anyone know what I might be able to do? I'd have just attempted a repair myself rather than settle for an inferior replacement

Oh and they fixed it quickly. I can't complain about that. I'm just enfuriated they'd act like such asses about the whole thing.
