i own a dell m90.. my original review here http://www.notebookforums.com/thread161065.html

in comparison
the m6300: looks and feels the same except no dell media direct button. instead a button that changes the dell quickset profile

battery life:
quite good.. just managed to watch 4hrs of xvid coded movies with screen brighness 2 settings above the lowest

Nice one.

Yeah I'm sitting here with them side by side too, setting it up. They are identical except for that button and they took off the subwoofer, same weight everything, just the guts that are different. Man same basic form factor since 9300, love it.

My Fx3600 should be here next week too. Woohooo!
I do hope they keep the 9300 form factor for these for a while longer--when my m1710 needs replacing, I'd really like to get something that is very comparable in size/weight/form factor, not to mention its docking station.
the setting of core/mem are the same as 8800M (500/799). You should be able to OCing at least 660/980.

Is that the same chassis as the 1710? I am wondering if a motherboard from a M6300 would fit in a 1710? My 1710 needs a motherboard and a replacement cannot be had from Dell at this time. Could I use the stock 7900GTX and 2GHZ cpu in it as well?

You most likely could use your GPU but the CPU has to be replaced for sure. You probably would need a new screen too or at least the M6300's inverter. I just don't think the price fits the upgrade at this point.

overclocked results

Got my fx3600 today. Redid the thermal paste and ran a first test with same clocks as you reds and got 200 3dmarks less even with faster cpu, maybe its a vista 64 thing

I upped the clocks to what quicksilver suggested and it ran fine with no throttle down, 660 / 980

Got 9231 3dmark6 which is on par with the Sager with the 8800 GTX and 45mm 2.8 cpu which Steve just tested (9363) but think that was default clocks on GTX??

Anyway, very happy, I'll load Bioshock and finally finish the game, and use it to test for safe 24/7 overclocks

*While I was waiting for the truck I jury rigged the FX1600 into my M90 (as there is a lug on the plastic palm rest which makes right hand side stick up) and bad news, it doesn't work with the latest bios. The screen just kept cycling colours like a 1980s screensaver. Sorry but too excited to try the fx3600, expect its same bios issue.

Some photos of the inards and GPU swap

[its my wife's dishtowel in the background ]

Board layout, very familiar; note no sub woofer and new flash module (empty here)

Original paste on the CPU

Both GPU cards beside each other, note the fatter heat pipe on the fx3600

Nvidia made good job of paste on GPU, later replaced with AS5 anyway since opened. Original shown here

The GPU cleaned with iso & coffee filter(I've graduated from using whiskey )

Card installed after ArticSilver5 applied

I've rerun the 3dmark6 benchmark with the same clocks and its solid. I'm going to leave it there for now.

As a comparison, my Fx3500 got ~6300 with a lower screen resolution in the test, so its ~50% better on synthetic benchmarking which is better than I expected

Going to run the vantage test next

Nice one!

I think Vista64 sucking some performance, but like it. I'll try it on XP pro too soon for fun. Loading stalker/bioshock/cod4

That link you keep posting seems a very long winded way of posting a quick, informal benchmark.

Btw....why did you close the fraps thread in the dell section........I can't see any fraps thing in your link?

Howdy gerry. Nothing wrong with posting the scores in here...Duke and Shaun put in alota thought and effort creating the benchmark system from the ground up (several months). That's where he's coming from. It would be nice to have these benchies included...
