I have a 9-cell battery in my Inspiron 1525 laptop

The thing is kind of annoying. Does the thing break easily? Is it more fragile than the rest of the computer? It seems like it would be. I mean...like if you're carrying a case with the laptop inside.....normally the back is facing the ground....so the battery will be facing the ground. Now, would this hurt it? With the weight of the computer on it...it seems like it'd break. I know i could make it so the front of the computer faces down, but I don't want to have to worry about which direction it's placed in there.

Also, is replacing the battery dangerous? Would it hurt the battery? Also, does the battery significantly degrade as you use it? I mean...in that case...I would only use the battery when I absolutely needed to.

So there are my questions. Thanks to anyone who can answer!

The battery is sturdy, no more or less fragile than the rest of the laptop. I'd be more worried about the screen breaking if you dropped the thing rather than the battery.... much more expensive item to replace.

Not sure what you mean about replacing battery being dangerous, or hurting it....

Yes, the battery does degrade as you use it. They are good for a certain amount of charge/ discharge cycles before they start to degrade and you get less battery life (same can be said for any laptop battery). If you are using the laptop on mains power 90% of the time, you would be better off removing the battery, and only using it when you are not connected to the outlet (leaving it in while on mains will slowly degrade the battery more so than not using it. Although if you are not using it you should perform a full charge/ discharge cycle every couple of weeks or so to 'excersise' the battery as such, and prolong its life).

Thanks a lot. So, the computer can be plugged in when it has no battery? And plugging it in with the battery makes it charge? And how do you discharge the battery? I heard that you should 'exhaust" the battery to 0% life before recharging it. How would I do that?

I believe the best way to do this would be to use the laptop on battery power until it is about to shut off due to low battery.
