Typing cursor, with mind of its own...

Hello peoples,
Formatted my lappy and now I got a small prob with the typing cursor. Whenever I'm typing in a dialog box, or in a Word Document, or just anything that you can enter text in... my cursor seems to move backwards about 10 characters, or usually if it's a paragraph it will go up 2 or 3 lines. (happens once every 2000 characters, or there abouts, or it may be times to like once an hour...)

Now i know this problem has happened before I formatted, but for some reason I'm noticing it more now, or i can just be bothered to post a thread about it. I cant provide statistics or anything like that.

I thought it might be some annoying spyware, but i got ad-aware to it's latest def file and also spybot s&d. If you say, "yeah it's spyware", provide proof. Like a personal experience or a link provided...

So yeah, thanks in advance...

hello,

have you tried reinstalling the problematic software first?

This can happen if your palm lightly grazes the touchpad while you're typing, causing you to 'click' where ever the mouse is (a few characters back, a few lines up, etc). Happens to me a lot (I keep my touchpad rather sensitive, although I usually use an external mouse anyway).

If you use an external mouse often, you may want to mark the option in the touchpad control panel to disable the touchpad when an external mouse is detected. Some touchpad drivers have an option to disable input from the touchpad while typing, but not all of them have it (the Dell Touchpad driver I have for my 1530 doesn't have the option).

Hope this helps.

Sorry for the late reply... it's my entire OS, it happens with any program. Mozilla, MS Word, Notepad, anything!

I guarantee you, this doesn't happen to me. I can type, then leave my lappy alone and it'll move by itself. + the fact that I avoid the touchpad (my hands lift up if I need to) and my sensitivity setting is pretty big too.

hey again,

this is out of the topic but dont use ad-aware, i have problems with that before, spybot is enough, or just use a secure browser like opera.

im dont have any answer with the problem, i didnt encounter it before, are you using an external mouse? anyways i occassionaly get some intermittent problems with my external mouse when connected to the laptop just remove and connect it again.

i dont think its a spyware, i think it a software problem.

once again, sorry for the late reply. and yes i do have an external mouse, but after my 'Microsoft Notebook Mouse' died, i got a 'Logitech Wireless' (problem is still there)

I find that spybot finds more than adaware does anyway, but i just feel more confident searching on 2 different programs (one at a time of course)

Correction of random cursor movement

Some notebooks are able to disengage the cursor/mousepad while typing, and then instantly re-engage when not typing. If you have an ALPS mousepad, which is standard on Sager Notebooks and similar to some DELL mouse controls, go to the "Control Panel", select "Mouse", then "Mouse Properties", select "Tapping", and then check the box that says "Tap Off When Typing". When this box is checked, when one types, the mouse pads does not function, and then the minute one stops typing, the mouse pad is functional. There is also an adjustment on the speed in which this transition takes place. The middle setting seems fine. It makes a HUGE difference. If you have a Sager Notebook, there are times when the ALPS mouse is deleted accidently, and then a Synaptics may take over. Reinstalled the ALPS mouse first before the above. I used to always use a separate mouse until I got a Notebook with this feature. Even with massive hands that hit the pad constantly, I never have a problem and enjoy the built-in mouse better than a separate.

Open the system and reset the connection from the palm rest to the motherboard. this cable can sometimes come loose and cause this symptom.

If the issue is not with the cable connector, then most likely the touchpad/palmrest assembly will need to be replaced.

on most Dells, this is a simply repair.
