7422GX Problem

I am having a problem with my Gateway 7422GX notebook just randomly shutting off. The fans will run at full speed for about 3-5 seconds and then the computer will just shut off. I know that there have been multiple threads posted on this, but its not an overheating issue since I have cleaned out my notebook, and its not any setting in Windows, because I use Slackware 12.0. Any other ides would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried reapplying thermal paste yet? If the problem still occurs then its probably a motherboard problem.

When it was still under the extended warranty through Best Buy a few months ago, they reapplied the thermal paste. After I got the computer back, it was still doing the same thing. I found something interesting that could be causing the issue.

I don't know for sure yet, because I have to test it all day today, but the computer is a little over 3 years old. The battery has pretty much been dead for almost a year.

After doing some research, I discovered that a laptop's power system will dedicate processor resources, and a lot of power in trying to charge a battery. So if my laptop is constantly trying to charge my battery, and there is suddenly a low voltage that goes to the laptop, the laptop will shut off.

Therefore, I am going to test this today. I am going to be running my laptop all day without the battery and see if it ever just powers off. If it doesn't, then I will try again tomorrow with the battery in the laptop. If it powers off tomorrow, then I can only conclude that it is a battery related issue, and I need to consider getting it replaced. Wish me luck.

So far, my computer has yet to power off without the battery in it. It is looking more and more like I am going to have to replace the battery.

So it looks as if my experiment failed. It took it two days, but the computer did eventually shut off even without the battery. I guess I am at square one now. Anyone else have any clue as to why this could be happening?

i 2nd SpinItch in the applying of new thermal paste (and a good clean up from inside), or get some confirmation that it was being done. Last resort - use ur extended warranty and push for satisfaction

cheers ...

I will definitely do that. As far as the extended warranty, it ran out in Feb.
