7800 go gtx artifacting

Thread Starter
So I was playing WoW in a clean install of Windows XP a couple of days ago when out of no where my whole screen starts artifacting. I am basically forced to reboot and upon rebooting, the dell boot screen also shows signs of artifacting. I then open up the laptop, and clean everything out, put back together and after booting into Windows XP, everything worked fine until I started up WoW.

My next choice of action was to do a reinstall, since XP takes so long I went to vista for a quick run, during the install, artifacting again showed up, but with a reboot, all symptoms seem to have disappeared. Every now and then the screen will fully artifact but I mean otherwise, it seems pretty stable. How long do you guys think the card will last? I'm debating whether its a good choice to start hunting for a new gaming solution now or whether to wait it out and see how long this puppy will last.

Thanks for your opinions,
Adam

This is Richard from the Dell Community Outreach group. I wanted to ask if you knew the warranty on your computer. Because is very possible, from what you described, that the video card has overheated and thus caused permanent damage. <o></o>

Please, send me a pm and let see how I may be able to assist you.<o></o>

I got the same problem with my 7800 gtx. It was even artifacting in the bios. Now nothing shows up on the screen at all. Dell replaced it once while it was under warranty, now no warranty and a card that lasted only 1.5 years...

If dell cannot help then try ebay for a good seller and try and get either 7900gs, FX1500M, FX2500M or 7900gtx, 7950gtx or if you are desperate an ATI X1400. Any of these will fit the E1705/9400/M1710/M90

Sounds like your video memory is damaged, I had exactly the same problems. Find the Dell Diagnostic Utility for your laptop on the Dell website under downloads and scan your video card in DOS, the utility will help diagnose what exactly could be damaged, It also gives error codes which could be given to a Dell technician.

Since he mentions the 7800 GTX I'm assuming he has a 9300/XPS2. In this case, you can use the ATI X300 or X600 or the NVIDIA 6800 Go, 6800 Go Ultra, or 7800 Go GTX.

Persistent artifacting at the BIOS screen means you have a dead duck essentially.

Yeah, I only had artifacting on the BIOS screen after heavy gaming and overheating, but it would clear up at normal temps. If yours always does it, it must be burning out.
