16.1 UXGA worth the money?

How big of a difference does this screen make for gaming? Is it worth the extra $500-600 ?

And how much will it delay shipping?

Any info appreciated

Oh one other thing, did Alienware stop offering internal Wi-Fi? I don't see it on the config pages for the Area 51m

Thx

Ok found the answer to the Wi-Fi issue in this thread.

Looks like PCMCIA Wi-Fi card will be the solution for now.
Now how about that screen?

Just think about it in terms of the display size...using a larger monitor than a smaller one. =)

If that amount more space is worth the price for you, then go for it. (The delays are listed in the box that pops up when you click on the "system ships in 7 days" offer, I believe.)

It is about 3/4"-1" more screen space from top to bottom.

You know, I think they are definately men who set the prices at AW. I know of no women that would place a $577 value on something an inch more in size.

That's for sure!

Although...for a laptop...it'd have to be for a darn good game.

Yep, I realize the real estate is only 3/4" - 1" larger, but what about the resolution? UXGA vs. SXGA. Worth it?

I've read that SXGA can be a little grainy on DVD playback. Does it make much of a difference in games? Do current games even run at decent FPS at the native resolution for the UXGA? If i'm running games at lower resolutions is the UXGA screen any better than SXGA?

Thanks

Size matters.

At least that's what the ladies tell me as they run away laughing...

Nah. To quote one of my close friends: "It's not the size of the ax, it's how you swing it."

And I concur with his statement.

And Lex: What might be acceptable grainyness (or any difference) to one person might be unacceptable to you. Furthermore, some people don't pick up on differences like that at all, but you might. Unless it's a HUGE difference (like say, comparing an old VGA to the best CRT), it's very subjective.

From what I've heard on here, the 16.1 is prefered by most of the people. Although, I've heard no one with the 15.4 complain. Most of the newer games are being created for wide screen, if not there will either be bars on the side or it will stretch. The 15.4 has a lower response time than the 16.1 and therefor less ghosting. I've only heard of a few people with the 16.1 complain of ghosting. I've never heard of any issues with DVD's on the AW 15.4 as a result of the screen.

Either screen will be only optimal run at the native resolution, so you will lose a little on either if you run at a lower resolution. Personally, I have planned on the 15.4 all along, even when the 16.1 cost was lower. Alot of people do not like the looks of the 15.4 as well. The 15.4 has 2 additional speaker. Plus, when alot of people on here bought the 16.1, it had to do with the fact that it was a lower cost and the 15.4 was only available in silver up to a short time ago.

Hope that helps.

Exactly! Very well put!!
I was going to go for the 16.1 because of the ability of all the colors. But now that the 15.4 has all the colors, actually it has 1 more color than 16.1 does at this moment, i decided to go with the 15.4.

16 is slightly bigger w/ higher resolution, thats all, 15.4 has better stats in all other specs including the important ones for game playing like refresh rate.....

I think the $575 price gap is ridiculous. When I bought mine i had serious reservations about getting the 16.1 and it was only 300$ difference. I asked myself, is 1 inch or so worth 300 bucks. On any other screen you could go up 4 inches in size for 600 bucks. ie from a 15 inch lcd to a 19 inch. Whatever the difference in quality would probably only be appreciable to the LCD equivalent to the stereo business audiophile(videophile?). Since they ran out of 16.1's the day I purchased mine(i had it selected and when i went to buy it it said error and i had to reconfigure and no more 16.1's were available) I ended up with the 15.4. It is an awesome screen. People still are coming up to me to tell me how nice and clear it looks. DVD playback is amazing. I dont know what graining is, but it certainly has fine quality for me, and I am pretty picky about these things. The widescreen is a plus as well. Games are no problem either although I havent used very many different games to see. Only negative thing i can say about the monitor is that since it comes in the same case as the 16.1, there is like 2 inches of space at the bottom where they jammed in two extra speakers and that part looks kinda tacky, but its still a fine looking machine. Conclusion: save $600.
Hope this helps.

Personally (I said personally, just to end the flames before they start) UXGA is overrated as most users end up oversizing fonts and icons 'cause they can't read them).

If you really need the real estate for programs your using or want to show off to your friends then go 16.1.

I can still fit two internet explorer windows in my 15.4 (might have to scroll to get to the bottom). DVD playback is not grainy at all (1680x1050) and you've got an extra 500 bucks to invest in the next graphics card to come along (or something else you've had your eye on.

16.1 vs 15.4 tends to come down to those who like to save their bucks and those who don't care how much they spend.

Dantes (HEY I SAID PERSONALLY ALREADY!!!!!! )

In a choice between the 15.4" and the 16.1", the 16.1" wins every time. Better resolution and bigger screen.

The first thing that everyone who sees my lappy is impressed with is the screen

'nuff said!

I don't play games at any resolution higher than 1280x1024, so having a screen that can go to 1600x1200 doesn't really matter to me. I'm really happy with the 15.4 and don't notice any graininess with DVD's. But....go with whatever makes you happy.
The price difference is totally ridiculous. But games just look so damn good at 1600 x 1200. Once you start playing at that resolution it will pain you go any lower.

I completly agree with FJ. I personally can't justify the $600 price tag for the bigger screen. I also like the extra speakers & better refresh rate. Also, the blue isn't available for the 16.1". The bottom line? What is important to you & what are you willing to pay for? In the end, I'm sure you'll be pleased with either one.

Does anyone know what the deal is with AW lately? For a fairly long while they have seemed to be having a very limited supply of...everything. Even paint colors! You'd think that wouldn't be too hard to get replacements of. Not to mention how long it is taking this "top of the line" company to get any 9700's around.

This thought crossed my mind as well, especially when the Hitachi 60GB 7200RPM Hard Drive had a 2 week delay. That really confused me, it is there recommended drive???

Actually I think that it's part of the problem. AW didn't figure that so many of us would all buy at the same time. Supply chain SNAFU.

Area 51-m with 15.4-inch WSXGA screen

Brand and Model:
Samsung 15.4 WSXGA LTN154P1

Resolution:
1680*1050

Response time
35 milliseconds

Frequency:
60 Hz

Ratio:
16/10

Screen Area:
331 mm * 207 mm

Mobile's Dimensions:

15.4”
350mm(W) x 290mm(D) x 38.5mm(H)

Weight:
15.4” 7.3 lbs. Without battery

The 15.4-inch screen model of the Area 51-m has four speakers, two located below the hand rest, and two located in the computer's lid just between the screen and the hinges. The 16.1 version only has two speakers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Area 51-m with 16.1 inch screen UXGA

Brand and Model:
Hitachi_16UXGA_TX41D56VC1CAA

Resolution:
1600*1200

Response time
20-30 milliseconds

Frequency:
60 Hz

Ratio:
4/3

Screen Area:
326.4 mm *244.8 mm

Mobile's Dimensions:

16”
350mm(W) x 290mm(D) x 40.5mm(H)

Weight:
16” 7.5 lbs. Without battery

The 16.1-inch screen is taller, but the lid of the chassis is just as wide as the 15.4-inch model, but the overall height of the computer, when closed, is 2 mm more. The extra height of the 16.1-inch screen takes so much space that they lack the screen speakers you would find on the 15.4-inch model.
The drillings between the keyboard and the hinges on both models are for ventilation purposes only.

Yeah sorry if you already knew that::::
