HP 6910p (XP) - hot docking issues

Need fast advice from the gurus!

Recently acquired a refurb 6910p (incl docking station EN489AA) from HP. Great laptop overall, but I had these mysterious freezes once or twice a day. Had to hard reboot when it happened.

Figured out (from proc explorer) that the freezes were spikes in the HW Interrupts. Updated all drivers, BIOS, etc... disabled a few devices. no help.

Finally figured out that hibernating on docking station followed by undocking was definitely a problem. So I stopped doing that.

Now, I usally go standby -> undock (seems to be okay). But last night I did an undock while laptop was on. Problem re-occurred.

NOTE: UNDOCK = push blue button on docking station. There is no "Eject PC" in my Start menu. Niether are there 2 hardware profiles as many web-postings claim there should be.

Q: Doesn't hot-dock support mean that I should be able to undock while on standby or "ON"? What am I doing wrong? Is this problem an indicator of a separate HW issue?

I need to decide fast if I want to ship it back to HP for a full refund (10 days left where i can do that). I'm reluctant to send it back if this is a resolvable issue. I need the hot-dock to work.

If this is a HW issue, I want to send it back.

Help!!

just my personal take:
. u can try to set ur OS to allow quick removal of external devices, & try again
. i dont know much about hot-dock, but sensibly, one just cannot unplug dock right in the middle of a running comp, unless all processes that were accessing the dock are unloaded.
. i use a dock, but i only dock and undock when my comp is off

hope we can get some more inputs from other users before the time runs out for u to decide to return it

cheers ...

qhn,
thanks for the reply. i know how to set individual devices for quick removal, but i'm not aware of how to set a global "quick removal" policy. please enlighten...
i've confirmed that "hot docking" with computer running should work with the HP 6910p.
thanks!

i m not sure about the "quick global" option that u mentioned. windows only allow one access. hp repository does not give any additional infos regarding the quick removal. have u tried to at least turning off peripheral devices before undocking ur comp?

I may have had the same problem with my 6910p - the display developed vertical lines, then froze. I checked the HP online diagnostics (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...ctID=c01455535) and found the problem described for the 6715b - was advised to download the latest ATI Video Driver and Control Panel for Microsoft Windows XP. I downloaded the corresponding driver for the 6910p (sp38830) at the HP site. Problem solved.

I've had quite a number of issues with docking and undocking my JP 6910p on Windows XP, and later on Windows 7.

On Windows 7, I've found that, when it won't recognize my sound or display, I can OFTEN (not always) execute the following procedure to clear things up:

1 - lock the laptop by holding the Windows key and pressing L

2 - switch users by holding alt and pressing W

The magic here is in the switch users - it must cause the laptop to re-detect, as it then USUALLY (again, not always) figures out where to route its display and sound.
