8790 internal wireless minipci bluetooth

Thread Starter
I just bought an 8790 without the internal wireless. I actually had a left over minipci G card and used that.

I am considering buying a MX900 logitech mouse with bluetooth.

Is bluetooth integrated into the new minipci that comes with the 8790 when you add that option?

Or is the bluetooth adaptor something different entirely?

I would like to order one and use a MX900 without the cradle. Is this possible?

I ordered my 8790 with Bluetooth and I am using a MX900 without the cradle. Works fine. I am not sure what the connection to the wireless network card is.

How s bluetooth installed into the laptop? Is it built in to the 8790 motherboard? Is there a miniUSB slot in there somewhere?

I think its built in. I can't see it anywhere on mine. I'm using a Microsoft Wireless Bluetooth mouse with my 8790 (without any problems). There is nothing sticking out anywhere or any (physical) signs of bluetooth on the notebook.

I think that the Bluetooth and WiFi are located under the HDDs. I didn't look to see if there was an actual mini-usb port (somehow I doubt it as it is probably hard wired).

It should be a mini usb port (though, it doesnt look like a USB port at all to be honest)...

Where is the miniUSB located in the 8790? Where can I purchase one?

I added a miniPCI card which was under one of the harddrives.

I've added my own wireless miniPCI (one I purchased from reading these forums from a place called www.discountechnology.com). I bought this almost a year ago when I wanted 11g in my 8887. This is why I ordered the 8790 without the wireless.

You can use the MX900 without the cradle, the internal bluetooth just picks up on it... You can either switch out the batteries or use the cradle as a charger, just plug the cradle into the AC outlet.

anyone using multiple bluetooth devices with their 8790s internal bluetooth?

I opened it up this morning and found a small connector labelled jbt1 under the left harddrive (miniPCI is under the right harddrive). Is this miniUSB?

I don't have an 8790, but I have connected both my MX900 and my Motorolw V600 to my 5680 at the same time.

sorry to go off topic, but ifrit does your bluetooth work simultaneously with your WiFi? I think I remember reading somewhere that you can only use one or the other at the same time. That's kind of a bummer if you want to surf the web with a bluetooth mouse.

Lyte, I plead guilty. That is what I said based on what was in the Manual on Page 7-4 "Do not try to use the Wireless LAN module and the Bluetooth module at the same time, as this may cause a communication conflict". However, many have reported no problem using both concurrently. Only caution was that you might want to select another channel for the WiFi if you experience problems.

No problem at all G-Omaha. But thank you for clearing it up. I am in the process of getting the 8790 exchanged for the 5690. But as of right now I am really in love with the 8790. But before I make any final decisions, I just want to try the 5690 since I was really torn between the two. If the 5690 comes in and I still like the 8790 a whole lot more, then that would be a good chance to get the bluetooth added on the system since the current 8790 I have does not have it.

i havent tried my wireless LAN card yet because i have no wireless connection around me!! >_<

i should really test it out though. But everything else has worked so smoothly that i just trust it'll work when i finally do put it to the task.

ok, i bought the bluetooth module. Installed it. My mx900 does NOT work with it. DO I have to "pair" it or something? I can only get the mouse to work with the cradle. THe billington software "sees" the mouse, but does not work.

Answering my own post.

The drivers that came with bluetooth were version 1.3.?.7 (dont remember the ?). These have a USB icon in device mangler. When I try to see the mouse in bluetooth neighborhood, it shows as a PDA icon with a question mark superimposed over it.

I did some google searching and found the following

http://talknotebooks.com/showthread.php?t=9896

and this had a hack for installing 1.4.2.8 (at least that is what shows in device mangler). Also the icon is now it's own blue tooth device instead of under the usb (Universial serial bus controllers) in device mangler. When I went into bluetooth neighborhood, the mouse show as a mouse this time and after playing around and pressing the connect button and going through the wizard nice and slow to let things sync up, the mouse finally connected. It shows a weak signal when I pull up his connection dialog and the mouse is a bit shaky at best. Maybe I need to put the grey wire to the bt mini usb module instead o having both antenna wires on my miniPCI 54g card.

Is that what yall had to do to get this to work. Doesn't seem very intuitive to me. Maybe someone knows where some better drivers are. The install on these drivers was far from smooth. The first time around I got license dialogs and such saying my bluetooth isn't licensed for this or something like that. Plus the files in the patched zip file go in two places (the dll in windows\system32, by renaming the old one and rebooting, then the exes in the Program Files\WIDCOMM\... folder after ending the tray process.

This had too much playing to get it to work, and the driver that come with it install pretty easy, but the mouse just don't work.

Yep, it was the grey wire. Nice strong signal now. Didn't affect my wireless either. Wonder if aux is even used?
