XP Extrememly Slow yet low CPU

I cannot figure out if this is a software or hardware problem. I would give you more information about the hardware but I cannot get the computer started in under 5-10 minutes then anything I do takes on average 2 minutes including opening a window. Needless to say, it is an extreme test of patience.

What I know is it is an older dell with about 1ghz cpu and 512 mb ram. It runs xp with under 30 process and has very minimal applications installed. It is my fathers computer who only needed it for internet explorer (fantasy teams lol). It does not even have office on it.

Everything was working fine then it just became very unresponsive. It is very streaky though. I ran Burn In Test diagnostics and it said the cd/dvd failed but everything else was ok. That program was very responsive but then I tried to open IE right after that and it took about 5 mins meanwhile I went and closed BIT when I was waiting.

So for that reason I was thinking it is IE but it also takes windows very long to start up. The xp splash stays there loading what seems like forever.

Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks for any suggestions and sorry for the long winded post.

It sounds like your computer is rapidly using up its RAM allowance or some of the memory became corrupt. If you can install more RAM in it or replace the 512MB with 1GB, that would probably make your applications noticeably faster.

I thought that too but I checked the ram while it was trying to load a page in IE and I was only using 182 mb out of the 512 I have.

I had the task manager open and I watched the processes, ram, and cpu for any changes. It even takes about 30 seconds to 2 minutes for the menu to appear when I right-click the task bar. But no outrageous cpu or ram usage. What is going on with this thing?? The worst part is how long it is taking to trouble shoot because I can't do anything without waiting forever. I have to start it up then come back 20 minutes later to see if it finished and it wasn't doing any of this a week ago.

maybe you've got spyware or other malware that's constantly looking for an internet connection before you do anything?

hm I am increasingly suspicious of that as well even though I am pretty good about keeping all our computers clean of all that. I just tried running scandisk before it starts up (on a reboot) and it is taking about an hour to complete. I'm not sure if spyware or malware would be causing this.

Could it be a corrupt internet explorer that is affecting all of windows?
