MSRP: $549.99

Build Quality:
The build is very high quality as many Asus notebooks. This model is the white version with windows XP. It has a matte screen for those of you that don’t like the glossy, and I don’t see any issues of paint wear, but I can see that it would leave palm sweat or dirt if your hands aren’t clean. It also have a built in 1.3MP camera with a small mirror to see yourself in.
Package includes:
- Carrying case
- 36W AC adapter
- 4 cell battery
- User manual
- Asus Windows XP Recovery DVD

Screen:
The EEE PC 900 series offers a 8.9" Display, 1024 x 600 resolution. The screen is pretty clear like a normal laptop w. matte screen. Nothing spectacular.

Keyboard and Touchpad:
The keyboard is very small and so is the touchpad. The dimensions of the notebook is the same as the old EEE pc but with a bigger screen so if you’ve used the old eee PC, it’s the same.

Speakers:
The speaker on this tiny thing is a lot louder than I had anticipated. I doubt its loud enough for most people to hear in a crowded place, but it should be more than enough to be used at home or your own personal space.

Heat and Noise:
Unfortunately the one thing that I was disappointed with this laptop was that it was quite warm. The palm rest will get your palms sweaty after 30mins to an hour of use. For the most part the fan is quite and wont annoy you.

CAMERA:

The camera has a great refresh rate. as all asus 1.3mp, the quality is good for a webcam.the quality is much better than what it looks like in the photo i have taken.

Battery Life:
IDLE, backlight at 100 percent wireless off the EEE PC 900 shut off at 3 hours and 5 minutes with the standard battery. it was decent and expected out of a small notebook. longer life than most standard notebooks.

In the next 2 tests, the notebook was equipped with both 1GB and 2GB.

Start Up Times:
1GB 27 sec
2GB 27 sec
no difference..

wPRIME
203.749

PCmark05
1GB (stock) 1121
2GB 1192
very little difference in numbers, but i saw that the apps loaded faster and there was a lot less lag.

HD TUNE:

HEAT SHIELD FOR RAM

PROS: very portable, bigger screen than the 4G, has great sound.

CONS: very small C drive, will get warm palms, no optical drive, doesn't include a mouse.

I want one of these badly... Would you mind rating the rest of the notebook in the advanced edit section? I'd like to know how well the aesthetics really are. The pictures look great, but sometimes that can be deceiving.

Thanks very much. Whats the performance like when opening and closing internet browsers, watching youtube, etc?

I wonder how SuperPi @ 2M would run on this.

i am doing all the benchmarks right now but so far i am not happy with this eee pc. its very hot here and this notebook is very warm which doesnt help me... its also got a lot of restrictions that i need to bypass in order to run pcmark. with a small partitioned c drive, you really cant install anything on C. has to be ran off D. but i am almost done with all the bench
post #5 of 10
what other benches are you running?
are you able to take the proc out of the eee's? maybe reapplying therm paste would help with the heat?

i hope that isnt a normal issue as i was going to buy one next week

applying thermal paste does not make the overall notebook cooler, it just transfer heat better from the processor. the cpu temp is fine. its just the over all radiated heat gets warm under idle or normal use. by all means this is not a bad notebook, i think i was getting upset because it was very hot and the notebook being warm just pissed me off more. the ac here doesnt work... also this notebook comes with no page filing, so once i set it, you are low on memory 30mb, and without it, i couldnt run pc mark. remember this notebook is strictly to be used for the software it came with, and thats about it. i dont see it being able to play games.

have you thought about putting linux on this?

we had the linux version to test, but i figured xp is what most people would use anyways. you know now that i think about it, id probably suggest getting the linux version and then installing xp pro. if you have your own copy. its cheaper better and you have more storage space. the xp version has less memory because xp costs money and linux is free. so they had to compensate. you can easily make your own external optical drive.
