ubuntu 8.04 and Inspiron 9300

Has anyone installed this yet? Using a canonical cd, live CD fails completely, and installing from the CD installs linux, but crashes if I try to run x. Can anyone help, or is the new Ubuntu not able to work on Dell Inspiron? I'm mostly new to this.

Hmm is the 9300 one of the ones they offer with Linux pre-installed?

At any rate, where exactly does the Live CD crash?

Also if you check dmesg on the installed version, do you get any error messages from X when it crashes? Just sounds like there is a configuration problem, will take a bit, but not to difficult usually to fix. You can read dmesg by logging in on the console after X crashes, and typing dmesg

No the 9300 does not come pre-installed with linux. The 9300 is a pretty old machine released in early 2005 (maybe even christmas 2004?) before Dell even considered Linux. Anyway, I used to have its brother machine, the XPS2.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 on my Inspiron 9300 (along with Vista SP1 and OS X 10.5). It installs fine, however I'm having a weird audio problem, where most of the sound plays through the integrated "sub-woofer" on the bottom of the unit. You might have a corrupted CD. I was planning on installing Kubuntu, but i got a bad image download, so I just used Ubuntu instead.

I ran linux for a couple years on the i9300 with no problems at all. Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu all have the drivers as of 7.XX so you should be fine I would redownload/burn your .iso.

IceBreaker if you go into your audio control panel you will see two sliders master stero and master mono. Stero controls the speakers on the front of the laptop and mono controls the "sub". Check to make sure they are level with each other or the mono is a little lower then the stero.

The good thing about the 9300/XPS2 is that the 6800 vanilla and ultra are well supported under Linux. I have the 7950GTX and the support for it is far less, hence desktop compositing (i.e. compiz or beryl) is prone to more bugs.

If you do decide to use Kubuntu, then the subwoofer is called "PCM" under Kmix.
