Well, considering my desktop ran counterstrike at 600x800 on a 16 meg video card and now its running it at 1600x1200 on 128...It's a lot better.

I have no idea what ghosting is, but I didn't see any difference, so ... no?

And yeah, I watched "The Matrix" a few times just Reloaded is coming out. Whoo!

7a. TV Tuner Update

Okay, I don't think the TV Tuner's quality is so great, actually. It's probably just mine because I havent seen anyone else have this problem, but I have to use something to push the cable down to get a good picture, otherwise i get a few staticy lines.

I'm using that ... fat antenna on the roof, so maybe that's the problem. But I think the quality is a lot better on a TV than on the laptop. Maybe it's just cuz I can see every little pixel. But yeah, just a little whine.

You have to understand that the tv signal comes in at a set resolution and its a lot lower than 1600x1200. Your tv probably has a max. res. of 800x600 or 1024x768 and your tv is probably bigger than your lappy screen. I'm sure you already know this but stretching the low res. signal to fit on your lappy monitor, which is smaller than your tv will cause it to look bad basically. Also you are sitting right next to your lappy when you watch tv on it. Back away about 10-15 feet and I bet it looks a lot nicer.

I thought non-HDTV sets were 550 lines of res... could be wrong, but it's definately NOT 800x600 or more.

DVDs are only 500 lines, LaserDiscs are 525, and VCR tapes are 200-something...

Those "lines" are the Y-rez, whereas your laptop LCD has 1200 lines of rez.

Yeah, I know, like I said, I can see every little pixel. I still think the quality isn't so hot though, but I like the TV Tuner anyway.

I'm viewing it at 640x480 most of the time. Hmm, I took a screenshot of one of Leno's Headlines, where someone misspelled "Bush" in a protest sign, but I have to use one of the smaller antennas to see NBC3 and then the quality is much worse than in a cable.

I'll get a screenshot of a Simpsons episode when I get around to it.

Post #1000. Yay. Okay, done celebrating.

I've yet to see TV on an LCD that impresses me... even the ultra-low resolution units you see at most electronics stores are pixelated.

When/if HDTV becomes the norm, and they can figure out ONE (maybe two) standard(s), then I think LCD's will really shine (pun intended).

yea, tv's suck for resolution most are running 320x240 or equivalent.

My bosses $12k plasma hdtv will do 1024x768 and I doubt there are many that will do better. Granted that unit is a couple of yrs old now and has dropped to a 1/3 of that price. But it really points out the difference in display.

That's why my 21" monitors cost way more than my 30" tv.

9. Bringing the monster to school

Seeing as how I'm still a young'n, I needed my laptop at school today to give a presentation. I was, rightfully, paranoid about the whole thing and decided it was probably best to keep it away from my locker.

It stayed safe though, and it performed well. I showed people that half life two 25 minute 600 MB video just for kicks, as well as some UT2k3 graphics. All were very impressed.

A friend of mine saw it and said he wanted an 8887 of his own. That's how much this impressed.

What half life vide?? Where Half Life video??

Gimme the link to the download!! the damned thing must be bigger than the game

I think you can find it at lamespy (http://www.gamespy.com)

Joe

I hope HL2 is less linear than the original - I like having two or three things to do at once.

On a similar vein - is there any recent word on Dues Ex 2?

yeah, it's there. There's a video preview and an HL trailer. Make sure to get both.

HL2 is supposed to be targeted to running on a 700 mhz, 128 meg ram and DX6 card. Still, 2GHz is reccomended =P

Does your Sager crash often?

Hi all,

I've been reading up on most of the current threads in the Sager forum because I am planning on purchasing a laptop in the near future.

After reading most of the threads in the Tech support and Gaming sections I've seen quite a few messages on people having their Sager 8887-x crashing on them while playing games.

Is this a common occurance? Or are they the result of HT/DX9?

Please share any regrets or recommendations as it will help me with my purchase desicion.

I just want to know before I put $$$ into a computer that will make me go everytime I play a game.

Thanks

My lockups (what few there were) only occured with FreeLancer. DirectX 9 and HT didn't play well either (odd video things happening in BF1942); so I disabled HT and stuck with Dx8.1 and it seemed fine (less invisible ground textures than with HT/dx9), now I am running NON-HT and Dx9 and it's about the same as 8.1 was.

FreeLancer still locks up, but not as quickly; so I think it depends on the Game as well as the DirectX/HT thing.

Could the system be overheating thus causing these crashes? The only times I've experienced crashing (with my desktop) was during CPU overclocking.

I'm curious to see if other companies using Clevo experience the same problem (Alienware, Voodoo, etc.)
Not in my case, as I've run the game (FreeLancer) first-thing after bootup, so it couldn't be too hot! Plus the cooling on the 8887 is pretty good. It's better to feel hot air blowing OUT than nothing at all!

Sorry I can't help since I don't have HT, but I haven't run into any problems. I believe there were some weird artifact problems on a few games with HT though.

Tv Tuner How does it work?

I was just wondering how does the tv tuner work like what do u do to watch tv on the 8887. at first i tought it was a cable connection in the back but in pics that iv see theres non is it built in how does it work?
Yep, there's a coaxial connection in the back with a little dongle. You can hook up an antenna or your TV cable wire into it and you have TV.

JUST INTERESTED

WOULD THE TV TUNER BE ALLOWED TO USE ON PLANES?
Don't see why not... However don't expect to use it on takeoff/landing and don't expect much of a signal at 30,000 feet.
