dell relaced my 7900gs with a x1400 now what?

just got my less `than a year old` 9400 back from dell repairs UK
they relaced the m/board and 7900gs, but with a crappy x1400

When i rang dell, tech says we dont have any gs`s and we dont know if we will be getting any. but we got it going did`nt we? so its fixed!

Do they still make 7900gs?

What are my options?

Has this happened to anyone else?

cheers

7900GS is out of stock until at least June.

Dell offered to send me a 1400 to use until they could send me a 7900gs. I declined.

I have a single pipe 7900gs that is in the process of going out. I have already had 2 of these cards go out. I keep the heatsinks clean and I play on a lapdesk. I keep drivers and bios up to date. I don't overclock or mod. For some reason the single pipe 7900gs cards are cooking themselves and failing.

All I want is a working computer

You can start complaining on how the x1400 isn't fitting your needs.
Be logical on your approach, of course......They can't leave you in a sub par vid
such as that. I imagine ultimately....they'll give you the option to wait on a new card
if it comes.....or give you an additional upgrade in place....I don't think they would replace the laptop
with a 1720 but the possibility is there....Depends how much of a pain you become to them....

You know, you did PAY EXTRA MONEY for that 7900GS over the X1400. Its not about being a pain, its about getting a stable and working computer - AND that computer should have the parts that YOU PAID FOR.

I mean hell, the only reason they are out of 7900GS cards is that they keep imploding. My brother in law also has a 1705 that was replaced once in warranty, and now that the warranty has expired he was forced to buy a Quadro 1500M when the 7900GS went out last month. I am just glad that I paid for 4 years of complete care.

You know, Dell has made a lot of really nice and stable machines, but this particular configuration just does not work. My current thinking is that someone decided that Dell could save $2 per 7900GS by giving it just 1 heat sink pipe instead of 2. My guess is that this is why the single pipe 7900GS cards cook themselves - a design flaw. A flaw that is NOT YOUR FAULT.

At this point I have absolutely no faith in any 1705s with the 7900GS. I see people posting threads about overclocking and reflashing them and I keep thinking - Your nuts!.

Sorry - gotta calm down now. I have been in 1705 limbo for a week.

I hope they dont leave me with a sub par card, but they didnt promise to replace it as and when they get one, or even mention it, so it feels like they did it hoping i would`nt notice.

as to the upgrade, i asked if they have any other cards and was told that all the other cards that would fit, with the help of the guides in this forum, were out of stock as well.

as to 1720 I`m not a big fan and i believe the graphics card is no better if not worse than a 7900 so i would resist changing my 9400. I like it.

as to complaining and becoming a pain, I`m good at that, but if they dont have cards i`m not sure what it will achieve.

But i wont let them forget my card shituation.

Cheers

I would never accept that, the x1400 s so far from the perfromance of a 7900GS,

I would demand either they get me a new 7900GS or a New laptop

keep calling them and do NOT take no for an answer.

True....if the card isn't avail....

But, I for one would squeeze them for an additional upgrade....
then just pick up a 7900GS from a reputable Ebay seller. Mind you,
when I had my 1705 I modd'd out to an M1710 w/ an FX2500M.

If your not the techy type and mind your warranty...then your only option is to
fight for a replacement laptop unless they can verifiably put you on a waiting list
for the 7900GS. Other option is to walk away.

OK - Then have Dell send you $349 as a refund - since that is how much the UPGRADE cost for the 7900gs was when it came out.

Remember, the 7900 was a $349 option - and they just took that away from you.
"The E1705 also offers the 7900 GS now ($349 upgrade), but you can also choose to go with integrated GMA950 graphics, ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 HyperMemory ($149 upgrade), or GeForce Go 7800 ($199 upgrade). Of the various graphics card offerings, we have to say that there's little point in getting the X1400 HyperMemory given the cost, at least if you're interested in playing games. If you need more graphics power than the integrated graphics provide, the extra $50 to get the GeForce Go 7800 will more than double graphics performance (of the x1400)."

thanks for the replies guys

I wont accept this card for long thats for sure

the only additional upgrade i would want is the card anyway

The cheeky git at tech support did suggest just buy one, missing the point i think

if its true dell does`nt have any cards except 1400s the refund would be great, for an ebay upgrade, but i wont hold my breath.

I wont be letting it go and dell will be sick of hearing from me.

Cheers

Ask them to send a 7950gtx if they have one, here in the uk they are still selling new M1710 with them. Just go stick it to them and demand what you paid for.

The ONLY replacement you should accept would be a DUAL PIPE 7900GS or a Quadro 1500M which is the OpenGL counterpart that was made for M90 notebooks. The Quadro has the dual heat pipe as standard.

The Quadro is also compatable with your 90 watt power supply.

A replacement single pipe 7900GS is just going to do the same thing - break - based on my experience.

The 7950 GTX needs a 130 watt power supply - so he would have to ask for one of those too.

Yeah why not, if they give him the 7950gtx im sure he'd be glad to buy a 130w power supply if they wouldnt give him it.

When they told me they no gs`s i asked for 7900gtx, 7950gtx, quadro 1500 2500 3500, which i would fit myself but was told none of them in stock either.

and yep i would buy a power supply

I`m in the uk as well and they sell 1710 xps`s with 7900gs as well as 7950gtx on their web site, which adds insult to injury.

if they hav`nt got any, why advertise new laptops with them?

My guess is that the left (sales) and right (tech support) hands do nowt talk to each other. There may be cards in stock for manufacturing, but not in stock for replacement parts. It could even be that sales get new cards when tech support gets them refurbished from nvidia.
If they can not provide the proper card, then they should replace the laptop.

Can't see them arguing too strongly about this.

When I talked to spares awhile ago about a part for my older laptops, he stated the same thing. So most likely that could be the cause. However, there are two types of spare parts - new and refurbished. They are most likely trying to get you a refurbished part, so ask for a new one instead. They _may_ have those in stock.
