Anyone else know of what other dvd rw drive beside the uj-815 being compatible with the gateway m505? I am trying to upgrade. thanks

Have successfully added a 2nd 250 gb hd in place of the bass module, upgrade the b intel card to a g intel wireless card, upgrade the cpu to 1.7 ghz and upgrade the ram to 2 gb on my m505

Most slim IDE drives will work with your laptop. You just need to swap the face plates so it will sit flush.

I tried a uj-846 and it didn't get detected by the bios ;(. Don;t know if i should try another slim drive. Already wasted $60. I guess i will try to sell it on ebay or get an external case. ;(

Is that the slot load drive? Try the Pioneer DVR-K06, i had good experiences with that one.

Nice drive. I imagine all of these drives have the 50 pin rectangular interface. The uj-846 also have this 50 pin interface, but i am not sure if somehow the gateway m505 bios is limited to be able to only see the uj-815 only. Other possibility could be the uj-846 i got somehow would only works with Macs even though it has a 50 pin interface (hard to believe). I guess i could buy an external case (a $20 solution) and see if the uj-846 will work in the external case vs getting another drive which will cost me another $60+.

Any input appreciated.
