M1730: battery and 3d performance

Thread Starter
I have serached the forums and failed to find anything that answers my question specifically.

Earlier this year I bought one of the Clevo 8800M GTX notebooks, thinking I could use it to play games during my daily commute. Unfortunately, I quickly discovered that the 3d capabailities of the card were disabled under battery power by the Clevo hardware, so back it went.

I am now considering a dell XPS M1730 8800M GTX SLI model. I would be grateful if any current owners of this model could tell me what the 3d performance is like under battery power. I'm not looking for a great amount of battery life (between 75 and 90 minutes ideally).

Incidentally, I have just been told by one of the Dell sales advisors that the battery will last for between 3.5 and 4 hours when playing games... ha ha what a joke, where do they find these guys?

It's the same w/ M1730, but you can do little better than the default by using Notebook Hardware Control, but not sure how much it will help.

Good luck with that battery life. I'm not the one to say but I think people here consider 90 minutes in 2D apps as good battery life for that machine. Anyway, you can modify any machine to get more performance on battery with the cost of more power consumption. You would need to modify the BIOS of the video card to do this. However, no matter how many mods, you will not be able to attain anywhere near the clocks you have on AC due to physics.

Haha, zzpulp is right,I can get 90 minutes with the screen at min brightness,no led's or keyboard lighting, wifi on,and one 8800 disabled, min cpu and powermizer....but only just, playing a dvd without wifi on,cuts off about ten minutes from that.

Battery gaming....forget it

My power is plug in all the time. This is a DR, not just a lappy.

Put it this way, the power brick on the 1730 gets almost too hot to touch while gaming. That means its processing a lot of power while plugged in. You cannot get that kind of power from a battery the size of a banana.

well my battery meter says 1 hour 45 min when fully charged but i cant do anything on battery hell i cant even use media player to play movies at full screen on battery

I consider this a DTR with a nice UPS :P

Why doesnt dell allow the xps to have media bay batteries like the lattitude line? That way you could actualy watch a whole movie on battery if you wanted to.
That will make this lappy even heavier... It weight almost 2 lappys together....
true. but it would be nice to watch a movie without a plug.

The thread title had me laughing... especially after all the lappies I have owned.

No gamey on battery. It just cannot supply enough juice to be able to last any time...
