Toshiba A135 freezing up - Page 2

Still having problems with my A135-S4437 Toshiba laptop freezing up on me at random intervals. Happens almost once per day. It's getting very frustrating. Anybody else have any thoughts on a possible cure. My computer tech guy thinks it is a hardware problem. I hate to send it back to Toshiba though, as I need the computer for work.

Just being curious, did you try to remove Norton and just use the vista firewall and see? Add Avast for antivirus if you want, it is free

cheers ...

I have NOT tried removing Norton anti-virus. Do people have trouble with Norton anti-virus causing their computer to freeze up?? I am using VISTA Home Premium as my operating system and I'm not sure if the VISTA firewall has been turned off. How would I tell? Thanks for any advice that anyone may have.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Windows Firewall (if you need to turn it off, there is a link there (change settings)

Thanks for the info. I checked and my Windows firewall is turned off. You think I should disable the Norton Anti-virus I am currently running and re-instate the Windows firewall?? Will I be safe from viruses and spyware?? I use this computer for work and need to be careful.

If it is a company owned computer, you better check with your ITech at work.
If it is your laptop, wait until the coverage for Norton runs out then think of using one of the free AntiVirus programs out there like Avast, Avira, AVG.
If you are using Vista, the Vista firewall is a good two way firewall, WinXP firewall is only one way and not good.
The free AV utilities are good and use much less resources than Norton and less problems with stuff getting by.
You just have to remember to update it every couple of days (in most cases, they are not automatic (price to pay for being free)
You should also, download, install, then update SuperAntiSpyware to keep your computer free of those nasties and run it every week or so, another good one to have is SpywareBlaster which runs in the background and stops the adware from loading. Again, make sure that they are updated periodically.
P.S. When you finish with Norton, make sure it is completely uninstalled before putting one of the free ones on. You cant run two AV programs at the same time

Thanks for the info. It is my computer. I am self employed so no worries about my company. I do use VISTA Home Premium for the OS, but the firewall is currently disabled. Unfortunately, I just renewed Norton not too long ago. I guess I could disable it, try another anti-virus program and anti-spyware program and see if that makes a difference in my computer freezing up. It is a very frustrating problem.

i have 2 vista comps, my set up is always:
. disabling all related norton start-up processes and services (i did not bother to UN-install it , yet)
. "free" avast as AV scanner
. vista firewall and defender are active
. smooth so far.

cheers ...

I have not disabled my Norton AV yet. Of course, my computer froze up on me again this morning five minutes after I started it up, before I even logged onto the internet. Can I just disable the Norton without actually uninstalling it (in case this does not solve the problem and I want to go back to using Norton). How do I just disable it, without uninstalling it??
