howdy guys, has anyone had a chance to look at this laptop with that particular screen option? also, are there any major downsides to this lappy? i'll just be using it as a desktop replacement, so battery etc isnt a concern.

small kick in the pants, is the lack of external dvi port...but I can live with vga if I have to.

re: ram, if I configure the lot, but take the ram down to 256mb, and goto kingston.com and order 2x1gb, its a helluva lot cheaper than the HP option....is it safe to do this?

cheers!

I have one and it's great so far. Check the following two threads for pics, benchmarks, and a short review:

Major downsides? From a desktop replacement point of view, no, not really. Even battery life with the PowerMizer feature of the Go5700 has exceeded expectations. I have been getting around 2:30. The screen is a dream. About the ram, I did the same thing. Ordered it with 256mb then replaced it with some I had already. If you have any questions let me know.

I've got one of these on order. I'm gonna try it out for 30 days to see if it can make me forget the two models down below in my signature.

Here's the configuration...

CTO Pavilion zd7000 series notebook
- Intel Pentium 4 3.20 GHz w/HT
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
- 512MB DDR SDRAM (I'll upgrade to 1 GB DDR 400 PC3200)
- 80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
- 4X DVD+RW/R & CD-RW Combo Drive
- 54g Integrated Broadcom 802.11b/g Wireless LAN
- 17.0" WVA WSXGA+ BrightView (1680x1050)
- 128MB NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5700
- 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

I'll pot a review of this machine whether or not I keep it.

ahhh, same config as what im lookin at, but I might ditch the hdd for a small one and get a 7200rpm as a replacement.

im almost tempted to wait a few weeks, see whats being done about this new Nvidia 6800....rekon they will have a lappy ver out soon?

also, you want to upgrade to ddr400 pc3200...so I guess its a lot better to buy 3rd party ram...cool.

I'm surprised that a 7200rpm HD isn't available for the ZD7000. I'd have chosen a 60 GB 7200rpm HD over the 80 GB 5400rpm any day. I figure that I'll invest in a fast, big (250 GB+) external HD if I hang on to the ZD.

The 6800 is only available for desktops on a pre-order basis (4-6 weeks until they ship), so I don't think we'll see a mobile 6800 for a very long time. Remember, notebooks just started shipping with the 5700 a few weeks ago.

The ZD 7000 actually ships with DDR300 PC2700 RAM, which strikes me as odd, so I'll definitely upgrade to a gig of DDR400 PC3200 RAM. Buying from Newegg, Crucial, and other vendors is definitely the way to go for memory. Another oddity with HP is that if you order 256MB, instead of the standard 512MB, the notebook's shipping will be delayed by several more weeks.

FYI,

3.06 and 3.2 are both on a 800mhz bus.

Not according to HP's site. The ZD7000's specs state that the 800MHz FSB is only offered on the P4 3.2 GHz and up.

3.06 is on 533 mhz bus. 3.0 and 3.2 are on 800 fsb.

Upgrading the hard drive to 7200 rpm took me about 2 minutes. The memory takes even less.

Well thats what I thought.
I called HP and they said anything higher than 3.0 is 800mhz bus.

HP Pavilion Widescreen Notebook zd7000 The HP Pavilion widescreen notebook zd7000 series offers the convergence of digital entertainment, photo magic, and Internet computing in a notebook design with desktop comfort. • Desktop performance, speed, and response in a sophisticated, mobile design – Intel® Pentium® 4 processor with HT* (Hyper-Threading) Technology and an 800 MHz system bus for improved responsiveness and performance – Expanded keyboard with numeric keypad – Stylish industrial design for in-home mobility

I'm a little confused because Intel lists their 3.06 as 533.
I already ordered, so I don't know what to do now, everyone is telling me something different.

Is there anyway to tell once I get it what it really is?
