i have been seeing the same thing on mine the only thing i cannot understand is why would it boot and get those green dotted line at the boot screen but not ounce your inside windows but then again why cant i get the image unless when i boot i am connected to the dvi port in the back if the problem is due to memory shouldnt the problem be constant for instance
with no nvidia driver on vista
boot screen = green dotted line
windows loading screen = green dotted line
windows pasword screen = no dotted line
windows vista up to 1280x1024x32bit= no dotted line
windows vista over 1280x1024x32bit = dotted line
-----------------------------------------------------------
with nvidia driver on vista
boot screen = green dotted line
windows loading screen = sometime green dotted line or will fail to boot bsod

now my question is since the problem is the mem shouldnt the problem be constant and also could overheating corrupt a gpu bios and cause those kind of freak error

^^ Same behaviours when connecting to an external monitor? If not, then possibility is a failing LCD.

cheers ...

ataxy, the problem we are all seeing occurs within the GPU and it's access to the graphics memory. Basically in your case only a small part of the graphics system is affected. So depending on how the GPU and it's memory is addressed, you may or may not see the corruption on screen. Most see a lot of problem because a larger portion of the memory addressing is affected. In your case it may be a smaller portion. Bottom line is the only fix is to replace the GPU board inside the unit. Out of warranty, the best prices I've seen are around $300 and up. I'd contact Dell anyway and see if there has been any allowance given by nVidia to Dell to replace these at a lower cost. I doubt there is, but it'd be a good change for you to vent to them your frustration if anything else.

In regards to my post above, it can easily affect LCD and not external monitor. How? The external monitor is considered "monitor #2" and therefore accesses a different portion of video memory. So, if the video memory that is used for monitor #2 is not affected by the heat issue, it may not see the corruption. But the corruption inside the chips on the GPU board are still there.

^^ A good and feasible possibility.

I haven't come across one yet.

ah i see, thx for the info, but i dont think i will invest another penny on that laptop mostly at an average of 450$ minimum for a replacement 7950gtx wich will from what i have notice true out the web die prematurely too. ah well i think i might go back to a gaming desktop i had way less problem with desktop computer, its sad i really liked the fact that you can carry it around but its not worth the price since you can almost get two desktop with similar capacity for the price of one laptop

ps: one last question why is it that it wont install driver i guess because driver affect the way the gpu use its memory

I also seen the cable from the GPU and the screen cause these problems. since it is a cheap part ( $ 15.00 or less) I would try that.

Most likely it is the GPU though. What temps are your guys getting ?

Cleaning the fans thoroghly is a must.

7950 GTX repair

Just to throw it out there again, my 7950 GTX failed for the 2nd time in my XPS M1710 and being out of warranty I was on my own. After a lot of searching I finally came across a place that can repair these cards ... apparently "permanently". They are called "CADis Ltd" and you can find them on EBay with a search of "Nvidia 7950 repair" or similar. I've had my repaired card in for nearly 2 weeks now I guess and all is well so far. It's still early but it's nice to be back up and running. They are great guys to deal with, with quick turnaround. I figured this was a better solution than buying a "used" or "refurbished" card from someone I didn't know ... and for a lot more money. For all you know you may get a card that was just tossed in the oven for a few minutes.
I paid $180 which included shipping back to me. Good luck whatever you decide the next time your 7950 fails I will try to keep an update of how long my repair lasts.
