I need help deciding between laptops.

I am looking to purchase a laptop for college this fall and the school i'm going to has a good computer store with good a good service plan for all its products. The only product is I don't know enough about computers to decide what laptop to purchase. I can choose from the following:

Dell Inspiron 1525

Dell Latitude D830

and Dell XPS M1550

The store also lets me upgrade different parts of the computer like the processor, memory, hard drive, ect... I dont know what is worth upgrading and what is just a waste of money. Keep in mind i do not do much gaming but i'll fill my computer with music and plan on using it for movies, school work, music, and web surfing. Any suggestions and opinions on the available laptops would be much appreciated.

If you don't require much horsepower, then you might as well stick to the lowest CPU speed (Core 2 Duo), 2GB RAM, and whatever size amount of hard drive you need for your music collection. Get integrated graphics, if available, to save yourself some more money and battery life. I can't help you choose though as I have no experience whatsoever with Dell.

id say which is cheaper, quite honestly if i had the choice, id get the xps system with the best warranty, biggest hdd, and pick a 2.0ghz proc, windows vista home prem/ultimate, id stick with the 1440x res if thats the native for the normal wxga screen

Have you looked into hp? Their laptops seem to suit college kids better or at least they are cheap yet they offer pretty good hardware. Also if im guessing correctly you might want to get a dedicated video card so during your down time to can play some games or something like that. The most important things for you to look for is probably processor and battery life, for the processor go for somethings around 2.0 Ghz and the battery should be upgraded to the biggest battery you can get. One more thing is look for a light laptop since you will be carrying it around a lot.
