I want to do this the right way. PLEASE HELP ME SO I CAN HELP OTHERS

Hello,

I'm having the same problem as this guy, which is that the machine (Satellite U205-S5034) is getting no power.

I could go about repairing it ways here: It could be the battery, it could be the DC Jack (and it most likely is) but I want to troubleshoot it the right way, since it is not my laptop...

I remember one time I had a cell phone that wouldn't hold a charge, so I bought a new battery but that still didn't hold a charge. Waste of time and money. I don't want to do that this time.

I do have one lead:
The lady said she could sometimes wiggle the power cord at the jack and it would charge, now it won't charge at all.

Please tell me the exact steps I should take before I open it up. (yes, i can operate a soldering iron )

Thank you

same thing i had. i could prop the plug up on coasters and get a charge but eventually this was no good. i removed the old jack and solder. filled the holes up with new solder. cut about 1 1/2 inches of 18 guage wire and soldered it to a new N jack from radio shack. stripped wire and applied solder to ends. soldered +positive to the single hole on the board. solder -negative wire across all 3 holes that are side by side. i had to enlarge the hole on the case to accept the new jack with a dremel. push new jack through from inside of case and put motherboard back in. the new jack has a nut that goes on from the outside securing it to the case itself and not the motherboard, which is the underlying flaw. viola! the only thing i didn't like is the new jack i got from rs is not as deep as the old one and the plug doesn't go all the way in. i haven't had any charging problems since! my uncle has a m35 and i may be doing this to his as well. if i do i'll take pics as i go. if there is any other questions feel free to ask. i know this is a frustrating problem and i'm just glad to be done with it. one more thing. i was considering buying a replacement jack off ebay but didn't see the point in doing so. even if i soldered it well enough to the board it would not correct the problem only delay it. radio shack n jack is the way to go. later!

i just reread your post. i guess you are wanting to try something else first. worst case scenario with jack replacement: you're out a couple hours and 3 buck for the jack. hope this helps.

I opened it up and and there is no solder needed. it connects to the mother board with a wire and it looks fine.

HOWEVER, the power supply is quietly beeping (like a heartbeat) could that be the problem?

How do you test whether it's the power supply, battery or power jack?

i meant was when u took the comp apart "I opened it up and and there is no solder needed"

ac adapter testing, can be done with a volt/ohm meter. Power jack can only be checked visually and "touching" - looking fine does not mean that it is ok, maybe a small crack in the soldering.

cheers ...
