Error: OpenGL32.dll

OK, I'm going to try and keep this as non-chicken little as possible. So I reinstalled a fresh and pristine (semi-legal) copy of XP. I then used XPLite to strip out the components I don't need or plan to update manually such as XP tour, Audio codecs, and Video codecs, and direct X (I use XP Codec Pack). Well lo and behold when I try to play a video with VLC Player in OpenGL mode I get the missing OpenGL32.dll error. I turn to trusty google and see that most people say this dll should come with the video drivers. I suspect that the original dll was removed by my uninstallation of video codecs. Anyways, I manually copied the dll to my system32 folder and it works fine now, but is the Forceware drivers supposed to put the dll back in or is the lack of installation intended. I installed the 175.xx Tweaked version.

No, it's actually a part of Windows itself, and your removing things likely got it removed somehow. The NVIDIA drivers just have an NVIDIA-specific "wrapper" driver, not the actual OpenGL driver.

I usually advise against removing things, especially audio and video codecs, AND DirectX, as none of those things should be removed, ever. The tour? That's OK. But... Removing things like that are not a good idea, as you can run into huge problems, which you have.

Yes, I have been doing a trial-by-fire method of removing system components and hoping something doesn't stop working down the line. I believe I removed OpenGL drivers by quite an accident....oh yeah removing DirectX is bad because to "install" directx, there has to be a previous version available to reference to. But stuff like the tour, ATI drivers (why they were included with all SP2 installations is beyond me), accessibility options, messenger, outlook, etc. are ginormous bloats that must die

Yes, but if you don't use that stuff, it's not having an impact on you at all.

I suppose one could say I have an OCD for a completely streamlined, tweaked, efficient, stable, and most importantly, blazing fast OS. With Microsoft it is turning into a quest for the holy grail. I think this will be my 4th reinstallation in a week and a half....one of these days I will acheive this goal and then Acronis-image it so I always have the best HP-Vista Only-Running-XP system known to man.

For example, running a sweep for empty folders on a clean installation with just drivers installed, 1/4 of the folders on my Windows partition were empty. That has to be slowing down the file system. Ugh....Windows Time service...who the heck uses that? Who the heck uses remote help other than for exploits?!?

Read my Windows Reinstall Guide. Ignore the drivers section, but the tweaks section, along with nearly everything else, is of note. If you slipstream SP3, ignore the Update Pack section, as there currently is no Post-SP3 Update Pack (but it's supposedly coming soon).

Removing things outright from the Windows install: Bad. Disabling services and doing other tweaks: Good.
