x7900 overclock and fan speed??

post #1 of 9

i recently upgraded my 1730 with a x7900 cpu.. when i overclock this cpu to 3.4ghz, as soon as the system reboots when exxiting the bios the fan speeds go to max speed and are very loud. when i get to the desktop i cant even turn the fans down or off using fangui.. does anybody else have this issue and is this the bios making the fans go full blast.. this is hard to use the lappy at 3.4 when the fans are blasting full throttle all the time..

Mine is the same way. Its very annoying and I leave mine at 3.0GHZ so the fans dont kick in. I really dont see why the fans need to go full blast all the time. Hopefully someone at Dell will see the error of their ways. If its warranty they are concerned about, they should make anyone who downloads a overclocking Bios responsable if the proc gets damaged. I really doubt the cpu would run any hotter than at stock speeds unless they also increase the voltage, which is normally not required when overclocking.

That is the only way to keep it cool

Yeah theres a reason for it, I would leave it. Personally I leave my CPU at 2.8Ghz unless I need the power, if so I crank it up to 3.4Ghz and I let the fans go wild.

I usually do the same. Getting 41-45 C on the processor (just applied AS5 so it will still go down some).

If the fans didn't go full, then the processor will get hot pretty quickly and it would just throttle down all the time. So in order to compensate for the extra heat, dell most likely designed a flag in the bios to say something to the effect of:

if cpu_oc_speed => 3.4 then
main_cpu_fan = "high"

The code probably reads

cpu_3.4GHZ=
Annoy owner_ Fans all on high_LMAO_HAHA

^ incorrect argument - unknown variable type :P LMAO

Sorry - I just had to do that...lol

Back to the OP - its normal, don't worry about it. Like everyone has been saying, its in the BIOS and you can't change it cause of safety reasons. It most likely wouldn't catch on fire if it overheats, but either way its to save Dell from replacing processors all the time.

with the X7900 when gaming playing crysis my cpu temp will vary from 65C to 75C at 2.8ghz but the 7900 not being a new penyrn processor i guess will run hotter.. are these temps normal for the 7900 and a cpu demanding game like crysis???

mine does the same when i put it to 3.4
