Linux on Tablet PCs

Thread Starter
Hi All,

I'm entering grad school and thinking about buying an IBM x61 tablet, mostly for note taking and homework sets, however I also do a lot of computational modeling work, which makes Linux a nice tool for any computer, so I'm planning to dual boot XP Tablet Edition and some version of Linux.

I haven't worked with laptop distros of linux in some time, what is the best out there, and what contains the best native support for tablet pc features?

Thanks for your help,

I can't answer for the best native tablet support right off, but it shouldn't be hard to add into most any distribution, especially given you should be fairly familiar with computers based off your post

Best laptop support? Eh actually there are a number with good support out there now. Ubuntu, Suse, etc. all get shipped on some laptops from the OEM nowadays. But there are also smaller distros, PCLOS, eLive, etc. that do decently as well.

My strongest suggestion is just to confirm all the features of that tablet are supported under Linux in general. Then pick your distribution based on what matches your workflow, and we can get the rest of it working pretty easily most likely.

I hear the biggest conundrum is getting the tablet functions to work with linux...were you thinking Ubuntu? I was debating putting mine on there...but have decided against it since it would have been a hassle. anyhow, try the ubuntu forums to see if people have had success with linus on their tablets....

If looking at Ubuntu, you might want to see take a look at Ubuntu Mobile and see if that would work for you.

You need to make sure you have the driver for the wacom loaded. Lemme check with a few of my artist friends and see if they can tell me what it is...
