Acer 5610 - OS Vista 32 - DVD Driver - Driver Issue

Thread Starter
My cousin who was paralized in an accident has an acer aspire 5610 the same as mine but i am running xp on it and he is running vista.

The dvd drive just stopped working and does not show up any more in the computer.
When i go into systems>device manager and go properties on the DVD drive it says the driver for the actual drive isnt working properly.

so

a) i re installed the vista chip set for it

b) flashed the bios with the 3.50 version for windows vista

it still did the same! i even tried to search on the internet for more recent drivers but it says its up to date?

has anyone got any ideas on this problem is it a vista problem?

short of re formating the hard drive and re installing windows vista 32 i have no idea what to do?

maybe run a windows vista recovery disk?

How old is the laptop. It is possible that the DVD drive(optical) is no good. You could go into the device manager (drivers) and delete the driver for the optical drive. Reboot the computer and let Vista find a new one. Viruses also do strange things to computers. Have you verified (by doing an online virus scan) that you are virus free. Google "online virus scans" and let the one called housecall run
