Compaq Presario C500 dead! PLS HELP!!!

Hi Guys,

Newbie to the notebook forums, so bear with me. I've had a C500 Presario for roughly a year and this morning when I switched it on, the power on button lit up and then nothing else.

Is there a way to somehow know that it's a fault with a hard drive, processor or possibly worse? I don't want to have to buy a new hard drive only to plug it in and it don't work.

Please help, it's my business laptop and has everything on it.

Stupid laptop!

Thanks guys.

This sounds more like a power supply problem. Does the power plug on your notebook seem loose?

no probs with the power supply. it's charging my battery right now as i sit here on the desktop. as soon as i switch it on, the fan goes on, power light is lit up, fan goes and then it all just dies, power light is still on though but nothing else. To me (i work in this business - not laptop, just computers in general) it sounds and feels like either a processor issue or hard drive but i don't know how to differentiate between the two.

Thanks for the response though

I threw that out because there are known issues with Compaq power supplies.

Do you have an external 2.5" USB HD caddy?

yep sure do, not attached. what are you thinking? If you're thinking of attaching the hard drive via usb, can't - laptop is running a SATA HD! Would the hd run if I had a desktop pc and a sata card isntalled in my desktop? THat might be one way to check if the hd is working no?

there r SATA external housing via usb adapter. ur thinking of the pc and the sata card works also

Yep - what qhn said. Drop your existing drive into one of these, then plug it into the USB port of another PC. If you can browse files, you know the HD is not the problem.

yea my desktop has a sata dvd drive, so simply plugged the hard drive into it and it works, so it's defo not the hd. So guess that's the end of my laptop then
