Anybody have the chipset drivers for vista 32 bit? I am running it without the chipset drivers for the mobile cpu, maybe installing them if I find them will speed it up?

I would'nt put Vista on a Gen 2. It's meant for XP.

See I don't agree with that at all. There should be no limit on the OS you run given you have recent hardware. Unfortunately, you would be on your own in finding drivers jtsunami. You'd have to look at the specific components individually.

Trust me a PM at 2Ghz does not run Vista good at all! Plus gaming will be killed. There's no reason to put a Single-core laptop with Vista.

Well I downloaded a pirated copy that worked great all updates and all, but my damn processor after boot up would just keep thinking for forever, not sure why, but gaming FPS was like 10 fps, I went back to XP

You'll get banned for talking about pirated stuff. Anyway I just proved it to ZZpulp.

Huh? That is definitely windows minded thinking. Kinda like those LCD/flash drive advertisements that say compatible for windows vista (duh). The P-M despite what you think is not some puny weakling among processors. It is actually quite a bit faster than the C2D at certain applications. And even when the C2D has a higher clock speed, a lower speed P-M can outdo it just the same (say 2.0 P-M vs 2.16 C2D). Hardware is never meant for one OS in the consumer market nowadays. The only issue you would run into is finding the right drivers for your hardware. If you have the time then you can do it because the XPS2 still has way more horsepower than plenty of new laptops.

Oh I did not know you cannot talk about pirated software. Anyway, maybe it was something in the hack that made my processor keep thinking even after startup was complete. Anyhow XP is still much faster on FPS than Vista was. I have Pentium M 2.16 2gb ram and a 7800GTX overclocked on my XPSgen2, its a pretty powerful laptop still actually.

I'm not saying the XPS2 is bad. I'm saying Vista is a sucky OS. My PC is slow as hell, even slower than my Athlon 1,400Mhz in quickness. I had a M170 about 2 months ago, I know the Pentium M is good I'm just saying I would'nt put Vista on there and kill FPS.

Theres nothing wrong with Vista and theres nothing wrong with running it on a P-M...I ran it all thorugh Vista beta testing on my 9300 and it ran great...never had any problems with games or programs.

As for drivers, the ones that vista install will be perfectly fine...you wont "speed it up" by finding other drivers for it.

Saying Vista is a "sucky" OS is rubbish...it's just another Vista bashing "bandwagon" comment...

ok just installed it yesterday. only like it cause its new. i,ve been looking at xp for the past 5-6 years and if i ever look at it again, i think I'll puke. only reason i might switch is gaming. haven't loaded any games. but if there is a severe decline in performance, who knows.

performance is mixed. at fresh install, it actually felt speedier, probably cause my xp home was loaded with bloatware. whats weird is it feels a little slower AFTER sp1 install. all hardware drivers found comfortably. the sound drivers were picked up by windows update. dell quickset is missing. anyone know where to get that. i cant turn of the lights and all.

First thing if you want to actually go through with this. You want to put as much ram in that bugger as you can afford. At least, and I mean least, 2GB and I would max it personally.

Your chipset is Intel. Get the INF Update utility from the download section of their website.
Your video card is another story. You will need to go to laptopvideo2go.com (recommended) and get custom drivers. They should help a bit with the enhanced requirements.
Wireless card would be either Intel again or find a Dell model that came w/vista that has that card. Broadcom's website is good for drivers for Dell's cards too.
Sound- go to Dell's website and look up your XP driver. It will have the name of the software. Go to that "name".com's website and get the vista drivers. Sorry but I cannot remember the sound chip name.
You will have to do major tuning to vista once it is installed. Turn off UAC first thing as it will piss you off. Turn off indexing. Turn off Superfetch. Turn off Windows Search. If you are savvy Turn off system restore too. Then install Vista SP1 before the chipset drivers. Then do the chipset drivers FIRST! Then proceed with your terror. That should get it started for you.

Go to blackviper's website and tune your services too.
Then tune the crap out of vista. There are plenty of tutorials out there.
My install of x64 ultimate absolutely kicks butt. Way better than XP IMO. And it works flawlessly.

You may also want to look on laptopvideo2go for chipset drivers. They might have some vista drivers for the 915 chipset there. Anyway, 2 GB is the maximum ram you can use in the 915 chipset so he couldnt put in any more.
