4GB ram and XPS 1710 w/T7600g

Just Curious before I place the order, is the XPS 1710 with a T7600G able to "address" all 4gb with Vista64bit?

Or is this Santa Rosa chipsets only?

Why do you ask Grasshopper? The CPU is a C2D but is overclockable in the bios. As far as I know its Vista 64bit that can utilize all the memory whereas 32bit cannot [although its at least recognised now]. I think you will be very happy with that machine of you buy it. I have a T7200 in mine and am running Vista 64 home premium and it runs great. Seems quicker and more stable than the 32bit version.

No I already have the laptop, but from what I understood regardless of having 64bit installed only Santa Rosa chipsets could see/utilize ALL 4gb as opposed to others being able to only address 3.25gb.

I use Vista64bit on my desktop (as you can see in my signature) so i'm aware of the differences between 32/64bit.

XP Pro will only "see" 3.25GB but the OS *will* use the remainder even if you can't "see" it. This has been covered many places.

Seeing and using are 2 different things

No, the 945PM chipset that's in the XPS M1710 cannot, and will never be able to, address 4GB of RAM, regardless of your OS.

It's a hardware limitation, as the 945PM chipset, used in the 9400/E1705, M90, and M1710, also used a 32-Bit only CPU, the Core Duo, it isn't built with that support. It sucks, horribly (especially for people, like me, who have 4GB of RAM, but see "only" 3.25GB, even in a 64-bit OS) but there's nothing you can do about it short of getting a Santa Rosa (PM965 chipset) laptop.

Well, Thanks Fenuxx.
That's the straight forward answer I was looking for.

Not totally true. The Yonah CPUs where the only ones without the 64 bit support. The Merom chips do support 64 bit. I thought the 945PM chipset supported up to 4GB.

I don't see anything Tony said being incorrect. The issue with this machine is the chipset, NOT the cpu. Yes the machine supports 4 GB RAM (2^32) but all consumer OS'es I know of use memory mapped I/O, meaning that you the user will not be able to use the last few address locations as they have been reserved to hardware.

The funny thing here is my name IS Tony. lol.

Thanks for all the help fella's, i'm gonna go ahead and go with a 2GB/1GB dimm for 3GB and than try out 2x2GB and see if my performance changes or anything. (Trying before I buy, I can grab a 4gb kit from a buddy)

I have a I9400 and as said before and as i can read from intels website it says:
Dual-channel DDR2 667MHz Memory SupportUp to 10.7GB/s of bandwith and up to 4GB memory addressability, for faster system responsiveness.

I think i will go with the 4GB altough i cant use all since its not that much more expensive.
