So I am going to upgrade the RAM in my Compaq Presario F762NR, and I was hoping to max out the memory (3GB). I was going to go with these...

Will these work in my F762NR, and would you recommend doing this? Thanks in advance to anyone who helps!

No it currently has 2 512MB sticks

But that model only has 2 memory slots, and it is listed as max memory of 2gb. In order to upgrade the memory, you will have to replace either one, or preferably both sticks.

If you have 2-512mb sticks now, you can go either to 1.5gb, with 1 512mb/1 1gb stick, or, 2gb, with 2 1gb sticks of ram.

Actually its max memory is 3GB. Here is the product description from the HP website...

And I think it has 2 memory slots. So my real question is...will one 2GB stick and one 1GB stick fit in this model, and work okay?!?

OK, my mistake, I had the wrong model apparently. Yes, to get 3gb you'd need to go 1 1gb/1 2gb stick, but then I'd agree with qhn, better to go to 2gb.

You'll gain little from going to 3gb, and you'll lose the better performance of being in dual channel memory mode.

Ok, but just 2 questions. What is dual channel memory mode, and is it better to have than to have 3gb of memory? Is there a very big difference between 2gb and 3gb memory?

Dual channel memory started with DDR ram, and DDR2. It doubles the input of memory to the memory contrller, although of course the results are not anything remotely like "double the speed", however there is some benefit...

Generally, as long as the two memory modules are of the same configuration (they do NOT have to be a "matched" pair, as some would advise), it should automatically operate in dual channel mode.

It IS a fair question as to whether or not one would be better off with 3gb or 2gb dual channel. in fact, even though I recommend 2gb, a 3gb non-dual channel set up, would still be a little better performing...but just by a little, and likely not enough for you to even notice...and that is why I mention/recommend 2gb. I just do not believe that you will notice the difference, however, the price difference between 2 1gb sticks of ram, versus, 1 1gb stick, plus 1 2gb stick is noticeable!

A pair of 1gb sticks of ram should be easily had for $59 or even less, whereas you will likely spend around $69, just for 1 stick of 2gb ram.

So should I go for the two 1GB sticks after all?
Well, I would, but again, don't get me wrong, it's not by that wide a margin that I say that, but if the performance is so similar as to be beneath notice, and the cost is higher to go the 3gb route (and it is), then I'd go with the 2gb, enjoy the improvement, and also enjoy not over-spending on my upgrade.

If someone else here has gone this route, and feels that the 3gb performs better, or much better than the 2gb, maybe they will post their experience with this?

Alright, thanks for your help guys. And like petec2 said, if anybody else has some experience with this, let me know.
