Video Distortion with 175.16 under Vista x64

This is a bug that's been annoying me for months. With most newer 1xx-series builds I get a bizarre distorion affect when minimizing/maximizng windows. The screen image jumps all over the place and is generally "unstable" (though nothing actually crashes). It's almost a "jittery" effect, like one of the sync values is out of whack on an older CRT.

The distortion lasts for just a split second, and there's no lasting effect: The system doesn't blue screen and any running applications are unaffected. The problem is most pronounced when minimizing/maximizing Internet Explorer, though the "Image Settings with Preview" page of the nVidia Control Panel will sometimes also cause it to appear, in which case its a nearly continuos manifestation of the distortion.

The weird thing is that it doesn't happen with certain drivers. For example, 158.45 was very stable for me, however, most later drivers caused the effect. Likewise, the MobileForce 174.31 drivers run great, even with the tweaked settings. However, if I update to the MBF 175.16 driver I get the distortion again. Rolling back to the previous stable version always cures it, however, I like to stay current on new drivers which means each new build is a bit of a crap shoot/trial-and-error affair.

My question is: Has anyone experienced anything similar under Vista x64?

FWIW, I'm running a Go 7900GS (Rev. 1) with stock clocks on an XPS M1710 with 4GB of DDR2-667. The card has*never* been overclocked, so it's not a stress-related issue. I do virtually no gaming with this rig, so...

Not a showstopper, but annoying as hell. I've got a running collection of faulty drivers and anytime I find a newer version that's stable its like striking oil. This is no way to live...

You need to increase the 2D memory clock speeds.

The problem is memory bandwidth with the card, not the driver, as I experienced the exact same issues.

If you'd like, I can modify a video BIOS for you and you can flash your card with the new BIOS.

Funxx,

Are you sure? Again, this only happens with some of the drivers - a small subset doesn't exhibit the problem at all, like the aforementioned 174.31. If it's a 2D clock issue, then why the inconsistent behavior between similar (in terms of revision level) driver builds?

I'll try tweaking the 2D clock with nTune, but I'm skeptical...

Boosting the 2D clocks from 100MHz to 150MHz on the MEMORY (not DDR, if you're going by DDR clocks, it would be from 200MHz to 300MHz) fixed that problem for me, and for several people I know.

Call me stupid, but where do I change these? I see the Core Bus (375MHz) and Memory Bus (507MHz) speeds in nTune but I'm not sure if these are related to 2D performance or just 3D. Is this something I need to do with nBiTor?

Yeah, you should do it with NiBiTor.

You can't change 2D clocks with nTune (I don't know of a utility offhand that can do that, as RivaTuner doesn't either).

I would suggest the BIOS flash for a more permanent fix.

Fenuxx,

I went the whole BIOS flash/GSX route with my other M1710 (Rev.0 card). If that's what it takes I'll stick with the stock 2D clocks and the "crap shoot" when new driver builds come out.

Regardless, this is clearly a problem that nVidia needs to solve. Requiring someone to flash their *stock* GPU just to work with a newer driver is ridiculous.

It's actually Dell's fault for having the memory clock speeds so low in 2D mode, as most other mobile GPU's I've seen have higher 2D memory clockspeeds. It's actually only a problem with Vista and Aero when your resolution is 1920x1200 or higher, anything lower, including 1440x900 usually doesn't have the issue.
