The Apparent M15x Delay

Hi everyone,

I know you guys really don't want to hear someone whine about alienware service. As such, I will try and limit the amount of whining I put forth here in this post. I recently placed an order for an m15x (April 30th). Coincidentally, I placed the order a few hours before my friend placed almost an identical order later that same day. I've been calling AW almost every week to get an update as to what is going on with my computer. Each week I've been told that the screen/chassis is backordered. At first this seemed like a perfectly viable excuse. However, AW and I are now going on 5 weeks. About 1.5 weeks ago, I began to grow impatient with AW because I kept getting different reasons as to why my system was stuck in phase 4, and so I asked to speak to a supervisor. I was put through to Frank (I'm guessing Frank Azor?). Frank listened to my case and then told me that the backordered part did come in on the day that they were telling me but the cases didn't meet AW requirements and so a new order would have to be placed. Furthermore, Frank went on to say that at that present time no m15x's were being built. So remember the friend that I mentioned who put an order in later on the same day as me? My friend will be receiving his m15x via FEDEX today -- my order is still in phase 4. So I guess not ALL m15x's ceased to be in production. I was told last week that the 'new' order for the backordered part would be arriving today. So I called.......and was told that the part won't be in until June 5th and my order will not be going out until mid June (for now). I have been told a part is backorderd 4/5 weeks! I posted about this about 2 weeks ago in the "alienware phases" section but didn't really get any responses as to whether or not anyone else was experiencing delays, hence why I posted here instead this time. Please let me know if anyone else is dealing with this. I know I may have failed to limit the whining, but I spent a lot of money and I am aware of the fact that AW checks these pages. I know some of you may disagree with me but I really feel that what they are doing is wrong. Just tell me the truth when I call. Stop giving me half-truths to hold me off for another week. Anyway, thanks for listening.

Shawn

Sorry to hear about your delays...

Unfortunately with Alienware, once your system gets out of the main line for production, these delays seem to pile up. You'd think they'd reserve back ordered parts for systems delayed due to the part being out of stock, but that's not necessarily what happens.

I've seen people with issues like yours that have better luck just cancelling their order, and ordering a new one. Sometimes the new order goes through with no delays while those waiting for parts get the shaft...

Something similar to this happened to me with my m9700 order. Seems when they finally started shipping after the pre-orders, they shipped to the most recent orders first rather than going back to those people that ordered first and had been waiting the longest...

Hopefully your experience will turn out like my six systems from Alienware have, and the machine you receive will be worth the frustrations of waiting for parts, and being delayed while others seem to have no issues...

Hey thanks so much for responding. I wrote an email suggesting an upgrade of some sort OTHER than shipping. I also respectfully requested that they not send me an email saying that AW doesn't do that sort of thing or else I will cancel the order. So we'll see what happens. I looked on the site and the new orders won't go out until July 4th or 5th (somewhere around there)...so I don't know that cancelling will be the quickest solution. Then again, you have dealt with this on 6 different occasions and probably have a better idea of what to expect than I do. I'll just have to wait and see what they say to my email. I'm not the type to look for free stuff...but after spending that much money on a computer...and being told the same thing over and over again for a month now, the fact of the matter is I honestly do think that I am entitled to something that is put on AW's tab to show that they actually do have some level of CARE and RESPECT for me as a customer who has been incovenienced by them. But they may not see it that way. But seriously, thanks again for taking the time to reply. I really do appreciate it.

See thats the thing that bothers me. They told me the same thing they told you. What are the odds that a shipment of chassis' are defective?? Let alone, 2 shipments. How many other people have heard that the screens are backordered. I know I've read about that reason quite a few times because when I heard it I began to worry. I talked to my friend and he said the computer was in good shape and I really do believe once I get it that I will be happy...but I just feel as if they are really very unorganized to say the least. Thanks for taking the time to post a reply!

i was the second person to recieve an m9750 behind one other person on here... so there was an issue with the chassis... nobody was getting a m9750 because of the chassis issue... but with your case ur friend could have gotten the last chassis and then the next batch they got was bad which can happen when your dealing with third party dealers...

I haven't personally had to deal with this, all my systems arrived before the estimated date except one, and that was only a day or two late. My m9700 took a long time to get, but I delayed my order for the 512M versions of my vid cards before they offered them, so I knew it would take a couple months.

I do know they've had whole shipments of cases that had to be rejected in the past due to paint issues. I'm sure the chassis of the m15 arrives in Miami with the case painted, mobo and screen in, so they just have to install the configured components you choose, then test it and ship it.

If they have a batch of bad cases or paint, bad mobo components, bad screens, etc. that'll really throw a wrench into their production. I've seen AW deal with some delays by offering a different screen if they have those to ship.

I suppose you could be right and I thought the same thing with respect to my friend getting the last chassis. I don't know...I just think they could be more prepared for this sort of thing. If you pay a premium price you expect premium service. Anyway, thanks for replying. Hopefully it works out soon.

I've seen it happen with both laptops and desktops. If there's bad paint, or defective components in a batch, they ship em back to the manufacturer rather than ship them out. And on occasion they run out of the platforms with specific parts pre-installed, like the screens. I seem to remember having one conversation with a friend that works at AW about a shipment of memory they were waiting on that sank in a storm. They had to scramble and find supply elsewhere, but there are limited places to go that can supply the quantity of components that AW needs...

It must suck to be delayed long term and not be able to get a clear response. I'm sure AW is doing what they can to resolve the supply issues, but this happens with Alienware, thus the phase game section.

A big part of the reason they sold out to Dell was to get a larger and more reliable supply pipe. Seems like they're still working on it...

Thanks Hammerhead. I will ask them when they get back to me if the other screen will speed up my order. I ordered the 720p....but I am willing to spring for the 1080p screen. Thanks for putting some perspective into this for me.

I just got off the phone with AW. Apparently all of the screens are backordered and will not be arriving until June 5th. If anyone has conflicting info...PLEASE let me know. Thanks so much.

I've been watching the notebbok market very carefully and the power of all the laptops of late are amazing, so no wonder a lot of folks are changing over to laptops. It sucks that this is happening with you, but I browse through quite a lot of forums and most custom notebook manufacturers are suffering from the same short supply of parts. This happens when you want a custom build...from any company because of the popularity and hence short supply. I'm on my 3rd Alienware and I was part of the 7700 pre-order crowd, so I understand the waiting process...it's very frustrating! But hey, when you're dealing with suppliers and third party folks, sometimes there are problems and Alienware wants to ensure that they send you a good working system.

Hang in there! You're allowed to come and vent and the folks around here will show you some support...

Cheers!

Whata whiner!!! JK Shawn...don't do the Phase thang!

Siriusly tho, I've never, ever been lied to by Alienware. Who are you talking to (hold it you named names)? I don't get it, Alienware doesn't lie or tell half truths...dammit, mite have to ask the rite question, but no. These guyz listen and do shoot straight. Can't imagine ever calling Alienware and not getting an answer, maybe not the the one I was looking for...but the bottom line anyway!

I spent an hour or so on the phone with Alienware back in mid Apr 08 when I purchased my latest Area-51 desktop. I did this 'cause when ordering on the phone with a sales person v. the two or three day wait with all the other clicker outers is avoided...or more to the point, I had my debit card people and Alienware billing dept. on a three way phone convo, done deal... hang up. Head of the class...

Emails from Alienware and my card provider within a few minutes of hanging up. Machine shipped at least 2 daze earlier than if I would've clicked out on the Configurator. No weird authorization, wondering what's happening wait - just straight forward actually. Machine received nine daze early.

I made sure I had my "Billing Address" and my "Shipping Address" on file with my card provider and Alienware as an authorized vendor on the card. Alienware billing dept. will argue about different 'Ship To'/ 'Bill To' addresses if you aren't prepared for the BS. I've bought three from 'em and never has the ship to been the same as the bill to...

Case in point, the last Alienware purchase was for $2,850 and my debit card provider only does $2,500 max per debit and $10,000 ina 24 hour period. Took me about twenty minutes to get the Alienware billing dept. to 'swipe' the 2nd $350 debit back to back after the first $2,500 swipe...they just weren't getting the concept. They wanted to wait 24 hours...

Just do what you know and don't be slow Shawn and you can't go wrong...

Me? Would've canceled the order coupla weeks ago...

Why would you have cancelled the order a couple of weeks ago?
Also...not that I want to stray off topic...because I really do want people to let me know if they are experiencing delays (So PM if necessary)...but whats up with your 'zoid' picture?? I like it a lot but what is the significance?

The wait really does suck especially when things keep getting screwed up every week. AW offered me a 4GB AW USB 2.0 Thumbdrive even though they apparently don't have a "compensation program" in place. Its not much but I really just wanted to see if they actually cared to keep my order (hence why I said I would cancel if they sent me an email saying they don't do upgrades). I wasn't looking for something free but rather just wanted to feel like they valued my business. I know I may be jumping to conclusions but I'm just not used to putting an order in for something online and waiting this long to receive it. And when they tell me the part is coming on a certain day and then I call and they say its not coming in for another week, it is indeed VERY FRUSTRATING. But I really am appreciative of your post and the time you took to read mine. Thanks a lot!
