install XP inspiron 1720

thinking about replacing my inspiron 9300 with a 1720. Any problems immediately formating the vista install and putting XP on from my own disk? I read a little in the FAQ and it mentioned something asking dell for a disk. Any chance they'd give me one without a OS, I dont see a XP option for the 1720.

Don't think Dell offers XP downgrade rights on non-business systems.eg..both vista and XP media

You could always order a Vostro 1700 [black 1720]or 1710 and get XP preinstalled......the 1710 is much thinner and lighter than the 1700 or inspiron 1720.

If you really wanted the inspiron, you won't have any trouble installing XP if you have a disc etc....all the drivers are available from dell here

ya as long as they have the drivers I'm good to go. With the drivers available it dosnt really matter if they offer XP because I'm not going to pay extra for XP Pro which I already have.

Is there a list of the base differences between a Vostro and Inspiron, like ports available, camera card slots, etc...I configured a inspiron on the military aafes website for $939, aafes dosnt offer the Vostro but on the dell site I configured one with the same specs but a 7200rpm drive instead of the 5400 and it was around $990.

interesting thing about aafes vs. dell website, aafes gives me around 7 HD options for the 1720, dell only 2 or 3. Its not an actual aafes website but a dell link you can only access through aafes. Aafes give me more memory options, 1 or 2 gigs, same price for some reason and Vista Ult is not an option.

Dell will not give you a system with no OS

Dell systems are really good about being able to revert. My 14" Sony I sold would literally lock the cd drive out if XP was installed. Put vista back on and it works fine.

Now that is sheezy...
